Scholarship Competition brings 860 to Campus

           860 TOP HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS COMPETE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Approximately 860 of the most academically gifted students 
from across the nation who have applied for freshman admission to 
The Ohio State University will be on campus this Friday and 
Saturday (2/16-17) and next weekend (2/23-24) competing for 100 
prestigious scholarships.  The sixth annual University Scholar 
Maximus competition (formerly called the Presidential and 
Medalist Scholarship Competition) will take place at the Ohio 
Union, 1739 N. High St., on those dates.  About one-fourth of the 
contestants, who all rank in the top 3 percent of their high 
school classes, will take part each day.  Most will be 
accompanied by their parents or guardians.

While on campus, the students will take a two-hour essay 
examination, which in combination with their high school 
transcripts and ACT and/or SAT scores will be used to determine 
the winners of the 10 Presidential, 30 Medalist and 60 Tradition 
Scholarships.  Presidential Scholarship provide "full-rides" 
(in-state tuition, room & board, books) for four years of 
undergraduate study, currently valued at $11,070 per year.  
Medalist Scholarships provide in-state tuition for four years of 
undergraduate study, currently valued at $3,273 per year.  
Tradition Scholarships provide half in-state tuition, currently 
valued at $1,637.

The competition program includes information sessions for 
students and their parents and lunch with current Honors students 
and university faculty.  Reporters are invited to attend any 
event except the examination.  Reporters and photographers will 
not be permitted in the examination room.
