NEWS ADVISORY
700 TOP HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS COMPETE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Approximately 700 of the most academically gifted students
who have applied for freshman admission to The Ohio State
University will be on campus Feb. 24-25 and March 3-4 competing
for 40 prestigious scholarships.
The fifth annual Presidential and Medalist Scholarship
competition will take place at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.,
on those four dates. About one-fourth of the contestants, who
all rank in the top 3 percent of their high school classes, will
take part each day. Most will be accompanied by their parents or
guardians.
While on campus, the students will take a two-hour essay
examination, which in combination with their high school
transcripts and ACT and/or SAT scores will be used to determine
the winners of the 10 Presidential and 30 Medalist Scholarships.
Presidential Scholarships provide "full-rides" (in-state
tuition, room & board, books) for four years of undergraduate
study, currently valued at $10,443 per year. Medalist
Scholarships provide in-state tuition for four years of
undergraduate study, currently valued at $3,087 per year.
In addition to the essay exam, the competition program
includes information sessions for students and their parents, as
well as a lunch with a current Honors student as the featured
speaker. A schedule of events is provided on the next page.
Reporters are invited to attend any event on the competition
program except the examination. Reporters and photographers will
not be permitted to enter the examination room.
