Science Olympiad on April 23

1,200 STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

     COLUMBUS -- More than 1,200 junior and senior high school

students representing 80 schools will compete in the 10th annual

Ohio Science Olympiad at The Ohio State University on Saturday,

April 23.  The headquarters are in the Ohio Union in Buckeye

Suites A-G on the third floor from 9:30 a.m.- 6:30 p.m.  The

events will take place at several campus locations.

     The tournament includes 34 events in various science

categories, including aerodynamics, chemistry, physics and

geology.  The events are designed to be fun as well as

educational.  For example, in the Amphibians and Reptiles event,

students answer questions about live and preserved specimens that

are on display.  In the Bridge Building event students construct

a bridge of wood and glue competing to build the lightest bridge

that can hold a given weight over a period of time.  The popular

Pentatholon event consists of four-person relay teams completing

an obstacle course by answering math and science questions.

     "The purpose of the Science Olympiad is to encourage

interest in science and math and to demonstrate to the kids how

these areas of study can become part of our everyday lives," said

Sarah Sieling, the tournament director.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD -- 2

     Ohio State ROTC cadets and many faculty members donate their
time to the tournament.  Many of the materials used in the events
are donated by departments throughout the university.

     Over 250 teams competed in nine regional tournaments
conducted in February and March all over the state.  The top 25%
from each regional tournament will compete on April 23.  Forty
junior high schools and 40 senior high schools will compete
overall.

     Athletic-style medals will be given for each event.  In
addition, championship trophies will be awarded to the teams
compiling the most total points in each of two divisions (grades
6-9 and 9-12) during the Olympiad.

     The top four teams will be eligible to compete in the
National Science Olympiad hosted by the University of Arizona on
May 20  & 21.

     The tournament is sponsored by The Ohio State University,
The Ohio Department of Education, and the Science Education
Council of Ohio.
