Service, peace march part of plans for King celebration

Community-service projects and a peace march are among the highlights of the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Monday (1/20) at The Ohio State University.

More than 300 students are expected to volunteer from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as a part of the 4th annual MLK Day of Service at Ohio State. The 13 project sites include: Children’s Hospital, Greater Columbus Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, the Martin Luther King Performing and Cultural Arts Complex, and Sunrise Assisted Living. Buses will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St., to take participants to the service sites and will return at about 2:30 p.m. For more information, see http://www.ohiounion.com/mlk.

Later in the afternoon, members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity will lead Ohio State’s 2nd annual peace march in honor of King’s civil-rights activism. The march is titled “We the People: Celebrating the Legacy.” Participants in the march will leave at 3:30 p.m. from Ohio State’s Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave., and march to Columbus City Hall. There, they will join Columbus’ 31st annual King Day march.
