Sociologist Speak on University#s Role in Community

SOCIOLOGIST TO SPEAK ON UNIVERSITY'S ROLE IN BUILDING COMMUNITY

     COLUMBUS -- Robert N. Bellah, sociologist and co-author of
the best-selling book Habits of the Heart, will deliver a free,
public lecture on "The Role of the University in Building
Community" on Tuesday, April 12, at 8 p.m. at The Ohio State
University.

     The lecture will be in the Ohio Union Conference Theater,
1739 N. High St.  Bellah's appearance is sponsored by the Office
of the President and the Ohio State University Campus Ministry
Association.

     In addition to the lecture, Bellah will address two
luncheons on April 12 and 13 for which the public may make
reservations.

     Bellah is the Elliott Professor of Sociology at the
University of California, Berkeley.  His most recent books, which
he wrote with four other sociologists, are Habits of the Heart:
Individualism and Commitment in American Life (1985) and The Good
Society (1991).

     In these and other works, Bellah has gained recognition for
his understanding of the relationship between religion and
society, the nature of individualism and social commitment in
America, and the importance of family, educational, business,
religious and political institutions on the life of people.

     Bellah demonstrates how people can better understand the
institutions through which they live, take responsibility for
such institutions, and ultimately transform them.

     Bellah will speak at a noon luncheon April 12 sponsored by
the Ohio State Campus Ministry Association.  The luncheon will be
at Indianola Presbyterian Church, Waldeck Avenue at East 18th
Avenue.  The cost is $6.

     He will speak at a luncheon on April 13 at 11:30 a.m.
sponsored by the Faculty Theological Discussion Group.  The
luncheon will be at Ohio State's Faculty Club, 181 S. Oval Drive.
The cost is $10.

     Reservations for both luncheons may be made by April 4 by
calling the United Christian Center at 294-5195.  Reservations
may be sent by mail to: Ohio State Campus Ministry Association,
United Christian Center, 1985 Waldeck Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43201.

     Bellah is a graduate of Harvard University and has taught at
McGill University, the Center for Advanced Studies in the
Behavioral Sciences, and the University of California.  He has
been chair of the Center for Japanese and Korean Studies at the
University of California, director of the National Endowment for
the Humanities Summer Seminars for College Teachers, and chair of
the Department of Sociology at the University of California,
Berkeley.

     Other books written by Bellah include Apache Kinship System,
Religion and Progress in Modern Asia, The Broken Covenant:
American Civil Religion in Time of Trial, and The New Religious
Consciousness.

     Bellah has been honored for his teaching and his scholarship
and is a frequent speaker throughout the country.
