John Glenn Institute announces strategic alliance with Battelle
Battelle and the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at The Ohio State University have formed a strategic alliance designed to foster innovative and collaborative dialogue and research associated with key contemporary policy issues. As part of this alliance, two Battelle lectures and one Battelle Policy Day are planned for the 2005-06 Academic Year. The Battelle Policy Day is designed to inspire scholars from a wide range of disciplines to examine emerging policy issues concerning the relationships between privacy and technology. The Battelle Headline Lecture Series will raise public awareness of the targeted issues of privacy, technology, and innovation by bringing prominent speakers on these subjects to the Ohio State campus. Wexner Center praised by Ohio House district for service, diversity initiatives
At the 27th House District’s annual State of the District Address on June 21, the Wexner Center for the Arts was honored for its public service and “fervent commitment to serving the residents of Greater Columbus.” The district noted that the “generous contributions of the Wexner Center for the Arts have improved the lives of many.” In her remarks at the event, State Representative Joyce Beatty cited the Wexner Center’s diversity initiatives, including two recent film screenings followed by community panel discussions: “The Letter,” a documentary about Somali immigration in a town in Maine, and “African American,” which looked at cultural misunderstandings and tensions between black American students and African students at a Dayton college. Device designed to zap the pain out of migraine headaches
One out of eight Americans suffers from chronic migraines. In an effort to set them free, researchers at The Ohio State University Medical Center are among scientists nationally testing a device that could zap away migraine headache pain before it starts. Ohio State University Medical Center’s Department of Neurology is participating in a multicenter clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of a device to treat migraines called the noninvasive transcranial magnetic stimulator (TMS). TMS was created what are described as electrical storms in the brain, also called “auras,” before they lead to the headache. Dr. Yousef Mohammad, a neurologist at OSU Medical Center, says that although the device is currently available only for investigational use, preliminary data has shown significant benefits in previous pilot studies.
