Holbrook to give annual State of University address – Oct. 14. -- President Karen A. Holbrook will address faculty, staff and students during the annual State of University address. The event, set for 4 p.m. on Thursday (10/14) in Weigel Hall Auditorium, 1866 College Road, takes place during a meeting of the University Senate, Ohio State’s governing body. Research

Cardiac arrest may hinder ability to learn certain tasks -- A new study in mice suggests that survivors of severe heart attacks may have a difficult time with some learning tasks. A lack of oxygen during a severe attack – one where the victim stops breathing – can either kill or seriously damage neurons, the primary cells of the nervous system. The neurons that do survive a heart attack may undergo major structural changes that can affect learning, memory and other behaviors, said Courtney DeVries, the study\'s lead author and an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience. President Holbrook to be honored at Leadership Breakfast – Oct. 14. -- Ohio State President Karen A. Holbrook will be honored at the Harding-Evans Academy for Leadership Breakfast at 7 a.m. Thursday (10/14) at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road. Special guest speaker for the event is Greg Lashutka, senior vice president for Nationwide Insurance and former Mayor of Columbus. Proceeds from the fundraising event, co-sponsored by the Harding-Evans Foundation and OSU Harding Hospital, will benefit the OSU Student Choice Program, which emphasizes positive student behavior and activities. University to host public workshop about proposed Airport expansion – Oct. 14. -- Ohio State will host a workshop to update the public on the status and findings of the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the OSU Airport and to answer questions from community members. The workshop will be held Thursday (10/14) at Daniel Wright Elementary School, 2335 W.Case Road. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the formal program is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Barbara Snyder, Ohio State executive vice president and provost, will welcome the audience. College of Engineering Dean William A. Baeslack will give an overview of the EA, and a question-and-answer session will follow. In addition, the public will be able to review “information stations,” a series of display boards with information on the project’s purpose, the results of the Environmental Assessment, including the noise study, and a project schedule as it relates to the approval process. Festival explores censorship, editorial control in cartoons – Oct. 15-16. -- Should comic strips exclude controversial topics? Has the nation’s current political climate affected what is published? These and other questions related to censorship, self-censorship and editorial control will be discussed by cartoonists and editors at The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library’s eighth triennial Festival of Cartoon Art. The event will be held on Friday (10/15) and Saturday (10/16) at the Blackwell Inn, 2110 Tuttle Park Place.
