Ohio State honors unsung heroes of accounting -- Three distinguished accountants have been elected to the Accounting Hall of Fame, located at the Fisher College of Business. The 2004 inductees include Dennis R. Beresford, former chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board; Gerald A. Feltham, internationally-known accounting theoretician; and, the late William J. Vatter, influential professor and writer on cost accounting and related subjects. Wetlands professor travels to Stockholm to receive prestigious water prize -- Years of studying wetland behavior have paid off for Ohio State professor Bill Mitsch, who will receive the prestigious 2004 Stockholm Water Prize at a ceremony on Thursday (8/19) in Stockholm, Sweden. Mitsch, a professor of natural resources and environmental science and director of the Olentangy River Wetlands Research Park, shares the award with Sven-Erik Jorgensen, a professor in environmental chemistry at the Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Copenhagen. Hypnosis more helpful to men than women in quitting smoking, expert says -- An Ohio State expert in psychology says men who try hypnosis to help them quit smoking are more likely to be successful than women who use the same treatment. Joseph Green, associate professor of psychology at Ohio State’s Lima campus, said a review of 18 studies of hypnosis-based smoking cessation programs found that about 30 percent of men who used such a treatment successfully quit smoking, compared to 23 percent of women. Children can have better memory than adults (at least sometimes) -- Believe it or not, a 5-year-old could beat most adults on a recognition memory test, at least under specific conditions, according to a new study. These findings run counter to what has been known for years from memory research - namely, that memory develops from early childhood to young adulthood, with young adults having much better memory than children, said Vladimir Sloutsky, co-author of the study and professor and director of the Center for Cognitive Science. Buckeye Bullet hopes to set new land speed record at trials – through Aug. 20 -- Ohio State’s Buckeye Bullet, the fastest electric vehicle ever recorded, will attempt to set new national and world speed records this week (8/15-8/20) at the annual Speed Week event at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The Bullet was designed, built and maintained by undergraduate and graduate engineering students at Ohio State. Last October, the car traveled 257 miles per hour to set a new world record. In this event, team members are hoping the Bullet can be the first electric vehicle to break the 300 mph barrier, and set the Federation Internationale de L’Automobile (FIA) World Record. Undergraduates throughout Ohio to showcase research projects – Aug. 19, 20 -- More than 50 undergraduate students from universities across Ohio will showcase their research projects at the 2004 Ohio Student Research Forum on Thursday (8/19) and Friday (8/20). The event is sponsored by the Ohio Science and Engineering Alliance, which works to double the number of underrepresented minority students who earn bachelor’s degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Posters of the research projects will be displayed from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday (8/20) on the second and third floors of Pfahl Hall, 280 W. Woodruff Ave. In addition, seven students from five universities have been selected to present their projects in person from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday (8/20) in Pfahl Hall.
