Ohio State research funding tops half-billion dollars for 2004 -- For the first time in the institution’s history, Ohio State University researchers have received more than a half-billion dollars in research funding during the last year. The funding total is a milestone reached by only a select few national research universities. Total research awards for the 2004 fiscal year reached $528,157,120 – a 13.9 percent increase over the previous year. “This is a monumental accomplishment by our faculty,” explained Ohio State President Karen Holbrook. “This research support was awarded through competition with thousands of other researchers from across the country. The fact that our work fared this well shows the strength of the faculty at this great university.” Among the thousands of grants earned by university researchers were a $10.9 million award from the state of Ohio\'s Third Frontier program to support an Ohio Center for Advanced Propulsion and Power, a $1.5 million award -- part of a $5.7 million, five-year project -- from the National Institutes of Health on reducing cervical cancer in Appalachia and a $272,000 project studying the importance of periodic flooding on the water quality function of wetlands in the midwestern United States. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visits campus on Wednesday – Sept. 29. -- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will speak at The Ohio State University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (9/29) in 200 Campbell Hall, 1787 Neil Ave. Sponsored by the College Democrats, the event is free and open to the public. One of the nation’s most prominent environmental lawyers, Kennedy’s visit is part of a 10-city campus tour to discuss his recent book “Crimes Against Nature” and national politics. Kennedy is senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, chief prosecuting attorney for Riverkeeper, and president of Waterkeeper Alliance. Lecture series begins year by examining ‘Significance of Brown v. Topeka’ – Sept. 29. -- Vincene Verdun, associate professor of law, will kick off the President and Provost\'s Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series for 2004-05 with “The Significance of Brown v. Topeka” at 4 p.m. Wednesday (9/29) in the Saxbe Auditorium in Drinko Hall, 55 W. 12th Avenue. Verdun\'s research has focused on critical race theory, including reparations to African Americans. Seminar series examines public issues framed ‘On Moral Grounds’ – Sept. 30. -- Same-sex marriage. Stem-cell research. Pre-emptive war. Abortion. Reparations for slavery. More and more public issues these days are being debated in directly moral terms: what\'s right, what\'s wrong, and how do we decide? “On Moral Grounds...” is a series of public conversations about the moral dimensions of issues facing society. Sponsored by the Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities at The Ohio State University and the OSU Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center, the series will feature university faculty and outside guests exploring the ethical, political, and legal ramifications of current public debates. The first installment of the series, “Reparations for Slavery?” will feature Professor Howard McGary, Department of Philosophy, Rutgers University; and Professor Vincene Verdun, Moritz College of Law at Ohio State. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday (9/30) at the OSU Community Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Avenue. All “On Moral Grounds” seminars are open to the public. Founder of national teacher corps to speak at Ohio State – Oct. 7. -- Wendy Kopp, founder and president of Teach For America, will deliver a lecture at 4 p.m. on Thursday (10/7) at Weigel Hall, 1866 College Road. Kopp is also the author of “One Day, All Children: The Unlikely Triumph of Teach For America and What I Learned Along the Way.” Her lecture is sponsored by The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at Ohio State. It is part of the series “Odyssey 2000+ New Issues for a New Century,” which explores a wide array of policy issues including defense, the economy, education and politics. Teach For America is a national teacher corps that recruits high-achieving recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools. Since 1989, Teach For America has fielded more than 8,000 corps members in 16 low-income areas across the United States.
