Holiday poinsettias now available in designer colors - The colors of the season – and more – are now showing up in holiday poinsettias. The classic red is now joined by burgundy, white, rose, and even marble. Claudio Pasian, assistant professor of horticulture and crop science, says there are more than 100 varieties of poinsettias available and keeping up with the trends in consumer demand can be a full-time job. Each year researchers at Ohio State send samples of new varieties to different Ohio growers for evaluation. Pasian says red poinsettias continue to rule, although they are getting competition from some interesting novelty varieties. Pasian also says research conducted at Ohio State and other institutions has proven false the urban legend that poinsettias are poisonous. Study shows how takeover bids change stock prices of firms – -- While stock prices of firms almost always go up immediately after an announcement of a takeover bid by another company, a new study shows that there’s a lot of variation in just how much the stock prices may change. In fact, the study showed that about one-quarter of stock prices actually go higher than the initial bid price announced by the acquiring firm, according to Ralph Walkling, co-author of the study and professor of finance at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. He says the market is very good at determining whether a proposed acquisition deal is going to go through, how long it is going to take, and the final sale price. Lighting ceremony to celebrate completion of Ohio’s Third Frontier Network – Nov. 30. Governor Taft will join President Holbrook and top researchers, state and federal legislators, members of the Board of Regents and industry leaders for the official launching of Ohio’s high-speed fiber network in a “lighting ceremony” and symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow (11/30) at Ohio State’s Blackwell Inn, 2110 Tuttle Park Place. The Third Frontier Network is the nation’s leading statewide, advanced fiber-optic network dedicated to education and economic development. The symposium, which takes place from 8:45 to 11:45 a.m., will feature panels on the impact of broadbanding on medicine, manufacturing and education. Governor Taft will officially “light the network” at noon in the Blackwell Inn Ballroom. Following the ceremony, President Holbrook will participate in a luncheon panel and offer her thoughts on what the new network can deliver in terms of enhanced academic research and improved administrative collaboration. The event will conclude with an Internet videoconference linking researchers at six universities around the state. Ohio Staters to ‘Light up the Lake’ – Dec. 2. More than 40,000 lights will add an extra holiday shimmer to the area surrounding Mirror Lake. During the second annual “Light Up the Lake” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday (12/2) at Mirror Lake, located on the South Oval. The event is sponsored by Ohio Staters, Inc. and will include the official lighting of the lake, hot chocolate and cookies and a trombone quartet. University Trustees to meet Dec. 3. The Ohio State University Board of Trustees and its committees will meet on Friday, Dec. 3, at the Longaberger Alumni House, 2200 Olentangy River Road. The schedule will include an administrative briefing from 10 to 10:45 a.m., followed by the Investments Committee meeting from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. The Academic and Student Affairs Committee and the Fiscal Affairs Committee will meet from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., and the formal Board meeting will be at 1 p.m. in the Sanders Grand Lounge.
