Ribbon cutting and open house for The Innovation Studio – March 20. The College of Nursing is hosting the launch, ribbon cutting and open house for The Innovation Studio from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, March 20, in the lobby of Newton Hall, 1585 Neil Ave. The ribbon cutting will take place at 12:15 with a reception to follow.
The studio helps students, faculty and staff connect with peers across campus and around Columbus who can help turn ideas for health care products or services into tangible products. It is a unique, moveable maker space that will travel across campus to help foster inter-professional collaboration. Besides housing an array of tools, The Innovation Studio will host workshops on topics such as prototyping, pitch development and maker skills, and provide project mentors, entrepreneurs-in-residence and daily technical support. Students experience a day in the life of a Buckeye – March 22. Hundreds of high school students from Ohio inner-city and Appalachian districts will be on Ohio State’s Columbus campus on Wednesday, March 22 for Student Life’s “A Day in the Life of a Buckeye” program.
High school students are paired with Ohio State student mentors based on gender, major(s) and special interests and hobbies and spend the day together attending classes and exploring the campus. The program offers an opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors to experience life at Ohio State, and college in general, for a day to encourage and motivate students to consider continuing their education.
Students begin arriving at Ohio State by 7:30 a.m.

Social Work co-sponsors Opiate Summit – March 22: Last year, a record number of Ohioans died of drug overdoses, placing Ohio among the top 10 states with the highest number of ODs, many of which were the result of opiates. What role can someone play in responding to an overdose, how can a person help someone enter recovery and what lies ahead after treatment? These are just some of the questions the Franklin County Opiate Crisis Summit will address from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road. This event is hosted by the Franklin Country Opiate Crisis Task Force and co-sponsored by the College of Social Work. What’s Next IdeaFest offers new ideas for technology– March 25. The College of Arts and Sciences hosts the 3rd Annual “What's Next” IdeaFest, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 25 and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Chemistry Building (CBEC), 151 W. Woodruff Ave.
Ohio State students, faculty and staff come together for a two-day idea hackathon to explore the intersection of all types of subject matter and envision them in the form of apps, software, an experience, a product or a movement.
Past projects have included an application to take people on virtual tours of local points of interest; an improvement for Apple Watch to serve the visually impaired; a smartphone health app that reads glucose levels; and an augmented reality app allowing you to see what music people listened to across a geo-location area.

Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Graduate School, will host the 2017 Dissertation Boot Camp – March 31-April 2. The retreat provides Ohio State PhD students with the space to work on their dissertations with others; develop a plan to complete their dissertations; share best practices for preparing for academia and the demands that accompany this experience; and create a strong support system for students across academic disciplines.

Run Down The Demons 5K Obstacle Run & Walk – April 1: The nonprofit, Run Down The Demons, will host a 5K Obstacle Run/Walk on April 1 to raise awareness about mental health issues affecting veterans and their families, such as suicide and PTSD. Co-sponsored by the College of Social Work, the 5K takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Remembrance Park, outside of Converse Hall, 2121 Tuttle Park Place.
The 5K course is designed to be mentally and physically challenging, similar to experiencing the “unknowns” associated with PTSD. Proceeds will help create a nationwide online CEU certificate program to help educate professionals interacting with veterans and their families outside of the VA system.SEE: https://www.rundownthedemons.org. Former NPR correspondent Anne Garrels will deliver keynote – April 7. Author and former NPR correspondent, Anne Garrels, will deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Midwest Slavic Conference on Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in 220 Sullivan Hall. The conference is organized by the Center for Slavic and East European Studies and the Midwest Slavic Association. Over her 40-plus year career, Garrels has devoted much of her time to reporting on the former Soviet Union, Russia, and other countries in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Putin Country is based on Garrels' fieldwork in Chelyabinsk, Russia over a period of 20 years, experiencing and noting firsthand the political, social, and cultural changes in Russia outside of the major metropolis of Moscow. She will also address the challenges of reporting on Russia. This keynote address is open to the public, and is free of charge. Garrels will be on hand before the keynote address for a book signing. Alumni Association offers day of service – April 8. The Ohio State University Alumni Association’s Office of Volunteer Relations will partner with LifeCare Alliance and Keep Columbus Beautiful on Saturday, April 8, for the Central Ohio Day of Service 2017. Buckeye volunteers will perform a variety of tasks for the organizations such as delivering or preparing meals, yard work and neighborhood cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon at 670 Harmon Ave.
LifeCare Alliance provides services to assist older adults or medically challenged residents in Franklin, Madison, Marion, Champaign and Logan counties. Volunteers partnering with Keep Columbus Beautiful will clean up community areas within walking distance of LifeCare Alliance.
In addition to service, volunteers will also donate household and hygiene items. NASA’s Journey to Mars includes pathways to learning. A habitation system designed by Ohio State College of Engineering students could improve deep space living for astronauts on the Journey to Mars.
Part of NASA’s eXploration Systems and Habitation (X-Hab) Academic Innovation Challenge series, the prototype from the Ohio State team received nearly $20,000 in funding and was one of only eight in the country to receive a competitive grant. The concept—an improved passive water delivery system for space-based food production—was originally developed by a 2015-2016 X-Hab team from the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering (FABE). Those efforts to improve food production in space are being carried on by a new crop of FABE undergraduates.
The team’s Water Assurance Delivery System is capable of interfacing with technology that has previously grown plants on the space station. The team built prototypes with multiple materials and conducted several 30-day plant growth experiments. This project has influenced the design of the next generation of rooting pillows that will be used on future crops aboard the space station.

Social Work offers new certificate program in serving veterans, families. Seeing life through the eyes of veterans is crucial when working with them to better understand their mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health. To address this need, the College of Social Work is offering a new online Advanced Certificate in Serving Veterans and Their Families program. This 14-week training is specifically designed for social workers, nurses, therapists and anyone interested in exploring military culture and the impact it has on veterans and their families. Date: May 8-July 28. Participants will receive 52 CEUs.
