At Ohio Statehouse, Ohio State experts offer information on opioid crisis – April 6. “The Opioid Crisis in Ohio: Seeking New Solutions from the Community” takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 in the Ohio Statehouse atrium. Speakers include public health and pharmacy experts from across the state and from Ohio State, including William Martin, dean of the College of Public Health; Kenneth Martin, associate director for OSU Extension; Kenneth Hale, professor of pharmacy; and William Miller, chair of the Division of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health.

Former NPR correspondent Anne Garrels will deliver keynote – April 7. Author and former NPR correspondent Anne Garrels will deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Midwest Slavic Conference at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 7 in 220 Sullivan Hall. The conference is organized by the Center for Slavic and East European Studies and the Midwest Slavic Association. Over her 40-plus year career, Garrels has devoted much of her time to reporting on the former Soviet Union, Russia, and other countries in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. Putin Country is based on Garrels’ fieldwork in Chelyabinsk, Russia over a period of 20 years, experiencing and noting firsthand the political, social, and cultural changes in Russia outside of the major metropolis of Moscow. She will also address the challenges of reporting on Russia. This keynote address is open to the public, and is free of charge. Garrels will be on hand before the keynote address for a book signing. Collegiate robot competition to attract hundreds of spectators – April 8. Robots will invade the Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) on Saturday, April 8, during The Ohio State University College of Engineering’s robot competition.

The event takes place from noon to 6 p.m. at the RPAC, 337 Annie and John Glenn Ave. Preliminary round matches take place from noon to 3:30, with the single elimination tournament from 4:15 to approximately 5:30 p.m.

The competition pits 81 teams of first-year engineering honors students against one another to determine which student-built robot can best complete the required tasks. This year’s competition simulates the work needed for unmanned robots to make an island research facility operational following volcanic activity.

The event is open to the public; traditionally, several hundred spectators attend.

ROTC Wellness Boot Camp in the Shoe – April 13. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to compete with elite Ohio State ROTC cadets in up to six fitness events at Ohio Stadium at the inaugural “ROTC Wellness Boot Camp in the Shoe” from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 13. The event is hosted by Buckeye Wellness and supported by Jim Stoppani, PhD, fitness expert. Admission to the event is a nonperishable food item, which will be donated to the Buckeye Food Alliance. All fitness levels are welcome.

Events will kick off at 11 a.m. with a welcome from Ohio State University Chief Wellness Officer Bernadette Melnyk and are open from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Final events must be completed by 1 p.m. For more information: Gregory.263@osu.edu
