It’s back to school! Experts can discuss issues involving K-12 education
Most schools throughout Ohio have begun classes. To assist with reporting on K-12 education, Ohio State’s faculty experts can discuss various topics, including:

·Gwendolyn Cartledge, professor, School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, College of Education, can discuss the association between discipline and students in special education. She also can discuss teaching reading and social skills to students in urban districts.

She also can talk about how parents, particularly working parents, can take an active role with their child’s schooling.

Research

Siblings help children get along with others in kindergarten
Children who grow up with one or more siblings get along better with their classmates in kindergarten than do only children, Ohio State research shows. In a national study of more than 20,000 children, teachers rated students who had at least one sibling as better able to form and maintain friendships, get along with people who are different, comfort and help other children, express feelings in a positive way, and show sensitivity to the feelings of others. “Children without siblings were consistently rated as having poorer social skills,” said Douglas Downey, author of the study and associate professor of sociology.

Events

Officials outline plans for football home games – Aug. 31.
Ohio State kicks off the 2004 football season with a home game versus the University of Cincinnati on Saturday (9/4). Making the day as enjoyable, safe and family-friendly as possible is the goal of a number of policy changes that will affect the game-day experience. University officials will offer information on parking, stadium security and tailgating in a news conference at 10 a.m. on Tuesday (8/31) in the Ohio Stadium home media room. Media should enter gate 32 in the southeast tower and take the elevator to the third floor. Speakers include Beth Kelley, associate director of transportation and parking services; and Richelle Simonson, assistant director of athletics.

Marching Band prepares for season-opening performance – Sept. 2.
More than 200 members of The Ohio State University Marching Band will be dusting off their marching shoes and polishing their instruments to prepare for the performances during Saturday\'s Ohio State vs. University of Cincinnati football game. The band\'s rehearsal will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday (9/2) at the practice field south of Ohio Stadium. John Woods, director of the Ohio State Marching band, will be available for interviews at 6:45 p.m. This will be the first rehearsal where band directors will be using the newly installed “Teaching Tower.” The 34 feet high, multi-level tower is equipped with a new video monitoring system and upgraded field microphones.
