STUDENT RESEARCH SHOWCASED--May 11. Gender Roles and Women,
Marriage, and Roles of the Body in Theatrical Dance are just three
of the research projects that will be presented by Ohio State
students at the Undergraduate Research Forum, 10 a.m-2 p.m. in the
Ohio Union Ballroom, 1739 N. High St. Sixty-two undergraduate and
professional students will offer results of their investigations at
the forum. Cash prizes will be given to the top three posters in
each of the final categories.

JANET RENO TO ADDRESS LAW GRADUATES--May 12. (Not for release--for
planning purposes only) Attorney General Janet Reno will be speak
at the hooding ceremony for the 104th graduating class of the Ohio
State University College of Law. The ceremony, which symbolizes the
passage from student to practitioner, will take place at the Ohio
Theatre, 55 E. State St., at 2 p.m. Reno will not be available for
interviews; however, reporters are welcome to cover her speech.
Since this is an invitation-only event, please have a form of media
identification ready.

"WAITING TO EXHALE" AUTHOR SPEAKS--May 14. Terry McMillan will help
kick off Ohio State's African American Heritage Festival with a
speech at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union ballrooms, 1739 N. High St.
McMillan will give a reading from her latest novel, How Stella Got
Her Groove Back, and answer questions during an open-microphone
session. McMillan's third book, Waiting to Exhale, spent 38 weeks
on The New York Times hard cover bestseller list and was adapted
into a feature film starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett.
McMillan co-wrote the screenplay and was executive producer of the
film.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL--May 14-18. Several events are
scheduled for the festival, which is an effort to expand and
diversify the participation of the campus and surrounding
communities in African American arts and cultural traditions. The
schedule includes a poetry slam May 15 in the Ohio Union Conference
Theater at 7 p.m.; and a crafts bazaar May 16 from 12 p.m. to 6
p.m. at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th
Ave., and May 17 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the west lawn of the
Ohio Union. The Heritage Festival on May 18 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
on the west lawn of the Ohio Union will feature gospel, poetry,
jazz, an African dance performance and a greek organizations step
show.

THE CULTURE OF DISNEYLAND--May 15. Style: From Subculture to High
Culture is the topic of a lecture series presented this quarter by
the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Art and Design. On May
15, Karal Ann Marling, a professor of art history and American
studies at the University of Minnesota, will present Disneyland:
Malls, Freeways and Magic, or Creating an Architecture of
Reassurance in the 1950s. Marling's lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. in
the Wexner Center Film/Video Theatre.

UNIVERSITY PRESENTS COUL AWARDS TO STUDENT LEADERS--May 15. Fifty-
four Ohio State University student leaders will be honored by
President Gee in a ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union
ballrooms, 1739 N. High St., during the Celebration of University
Leadership (COUL) This annual event honors students who have
demonstrated leadership and service to the university community.

TWILIGHT OUTDOOR CONCERTS IN AMPITHEATRE--May 14, 16, 17. On seven
evenings in May, the School of Music will present free outdoor
concerts in the Browning Amphitheatre next to Mirror Lake on campus.
These highly popular events provide an informal setting and great
music that people of all ages can enjoy. All concerts begin at 7:30
p.m. Concerts this week include the Athletic Bands performing May 14,
the Jazz Lab Ensemble performing May 16, and the Concert, Symphonic
and University Bands performing on May 17.

POLAR RESEARCHERS OFFER TWO LECTURES ON CLIMATE--May 15 & 17. The
Byrd Polar Research Center presents two lectures this week. Snowmelt
Runoff and Flushing of Dissolved Organic Carbon from a Catchment in
the Rocky Mountains, is part of the Special Evening Seminar Series,
which invites visiting scholars to discuss the role of elements in
global climate. Dr. George Hornberger of the Department of
Environmental Sciences at University of Virginia will lead the
seminar beginning at 7:30 p.m. on May 15 in Room 240, Scott Hall,
1090 Carmack Rd.
On May 17 at 12 noon in the same location, the Byrd Center
presents Aeromagnetic Evidence for the Tectonic Segmentation of the
Antarctic Peninsula with Dr. Ash Johnson of the British Antarctic
Survey at Cambridge, United Kingdom.

ALUMNA-ASTRONAUT HONORED--May 16. Astronaut Nancy Currie, a 1980
graduate of Ohio State, will be inducted into the OSU Army ROTC Hall
of Fame in a ceremony beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Fawcett Center,
2400 Olentangy River Rd. Major Currie, a native of Troy, was a
mission specialist on NASA flights in 1993 and 1995. Reporters may
meet with Currie during the social hour preceding the ceremony, at
6:30 p.m.

ELECTRONIC COMMERCE CONFERENCE--May 16. John Dvorak, noted author
and columnist in the field of electronic commerce, will share his
predictions for the future of electronic commerce at a luncheon and
morning seminar entitled Electronic Commerce--A World Wide Future on
May 16 at the Hyatt on Capitol Square. Dvorak will lead a panel of
local legal and business experts in a discussion of emerging
electronic commerce issues and the information superhighway. The
event is sponsored by the OSU Center for International Business
Education and Research (CIBER), the Checkfree Corporation and the
law firm of Emens, Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter.

"HOSPICE: A PHOTOGRAPHIC INQUIRY"--May 18-Aug. 4. This Wexner
Center exhibit explores the hospice approach to health care through
the eyes of five contemporary photographers. In addition, the
Center will present a series of educational programs aimed at
broadening public understanding of the goals and benefits of hospice
care. The programs are offered in partnership with seven local
hospices and hospitals. May programs include Hospice: The Artists'
Response, on May 17, 2-3:30 p.m.; Hospice: Healing, and the Arts, on
May 18, 9:30 a.m.-2:15 p.m.; and Ethical Issues in Hospice Care, on
May 31, 10 a.m.-3:15 p.m. The exhibit opens at a reception on May
17, 8-11 p.m.

ASIAN AWARENESS MONTH--May 1-31. Manifesting a new GenerAsian is the
theme for the 1996 celebration at Ohio State. Throughout the month
there will be panel discussions, dances, concerts, conferences and
other activities.
