University Communication offers a listing of potential news stories 
on the Columbus campus.  We'll update this listing every week.

BOOK DEPOSITORY OPEN HOUSE--Jan. 30.  At Ohio State's new book 
depository, 2700 Kenny Rd., librarians retrieve books from 30 foot 
high shelves by riding a 'cherry picker' forklift.  The depository 
will hold an open house and tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 
depository is designed to hold up to 2 million books and currently 
holds about 300,000 volumes.  The building climate is cold and dark-
-perfect for preserving books.  It features dense book shelving--
shelves are 30 feet tall and 170 feet long to accommodates about 20 
times more books per square foot than conventional shelving.  The 
depository will also house the University Archives, which have 1 
million photo images of Ohio State.

POETRY IN THE WINTER--Jan. 27.  Some of Ohio's best poets will 
express themselves in Seasons of Poetry, 2-5 p.m., at the Frank Hale 
Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.  The first half of the 
program will feature established poets.  The remainder will be open 
mike.  Seasons of Poetry was started by poet IS Said in 1994 to give 
exposure to established and new poets.

UNITED BLACK WORLD MONTH--Jan 31-Feb. 29.  Ohio State commemorates 
Black heritage in February with a variety of programs designed to 
celebrate the history and achievements of African Americans.  The 
month kicks off with a march Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Hale Center, 
153 W. 12th Ave, to the Ohio Union, 1739 North High St.  Other 
activities include a presentation of Living the Dream: Successful 
Blacks in the American Business and Entrepreneurial World, live via 
satellite from Washington, D.C., Jan. 31, 12:45-4:30 p.m. in Drinko 
Hall, (Law Building) 55 W. 12th Ave.  The Ohio Union Terrace Dining 
Room offers soul food luncheons Feb 2, 5-9, 16 and 23.  Events at 
the Hale Center include Voices from the Village on Feb. 5, 12, 19 
and 26; Children's Cultural Hour, Feb. 6, 13, 20, and 27; and a 
variety of workshops.

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES--Feb. 2.  The Board meets in 
the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St., with committee meetings at 9 a.m. 
and 9: 45 a.m. and the full board meeting at 10:45 a.m. in the South 
Terrace Lounge.  Among the agenda items: an update on the ARMS 
project to reduce paperwork, and comments from students.

CAP--THE CURE FOR WINTER BLAHS--The Creative Acitivites Program 
(CAP) offers 160 non-credit, adult education programs this winter, 
including a course on prehistoric Ohio, Dawn over Ohio--Discovering 
the Moundbuilders, which takes students to mounds in Peebles and 
Newark.  Other courses include wine-tasting, cooking, getting 
organized, and belly dancing.

WETLAND BOARDWALK CONSTRUCTION--Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 
25.  Volunteers with carpentry and construction experience are 
needed to help construct a boardwalk at the Ohio State University 
Wetland Research Park, 352 Dodridge Rd.  Volunteers will work 9 
a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Saturdays or 1-4 p.m. Sundays.  Owens-Corning 
Corp. has donated recycled plastic lumber to the School of Natural 
Resources for the project; the Seabees will help with construction; 
and several Ohio building companies will provide supervision.
