DRIVING WITH LOW VISION--People who previously could not drive 
because of low vision may now get that opportunity, with help from 
the Low Vision Clinic in the Ohio State University College of 
Optometry.  An Ohio ruling, revised in 1990, allows the operation of 
vehicles with the assistance of bioptic/telescope devices.  To help 
determine the most effective way to assist low vision drivers and 
their success rate, a clinic pilot program offers testing, fitting 
and training with the devices.

MEDICAL CENTER PRESENTS WOMEN'S HEALTH SERIES Feb. 13; Mar. 14, and 
Apr. 10.--The Ohio State Medical Center presents Nutrition and 
Women, as part of the 1996 series of Women and Wellness seminars, 7-
9 p.m. in the Rhodes Hall Auditorium, 450 W. 10th Avenue.  
Registered dietitians will discuss nutritional needs of teenagers 
with emphasis on teen athletes, normal growth requirements, and fad 
diets.  The seminar will also cover a mother's role in feeding a 
family, with a look at nutrition for children and adults, dealing 
with changing schedules, and vitamin/mineral supplementation.  The 
next two programs in the series are Should We Have a Baby? on Mar. 
14; and What You Should Expect from a GYN Exam on Apr. 10.  The 
seminars are free and open to the public.

YELLOW MOON RISES AT OSU--Feb. 14-17, Feb. 28-Mar. 2  Carlyle 
Brown's Yellow Moon Rising, a play about slavery and escape in 19th 
century America, will be presented by the Ohio State University 
Department of Theater in the Stadium II Theater, (Drake Union), 1849 
Cannon Drive.  Brown, who is a guest instructor in the theater 
department as well as the current Thurber House playwright-in-
residence, will also direct the production.
In addition, as part of United Black World Month, Brown will 
participate in a brown bag lunch  on Feb. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. 
at the Hale Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.

MINORITY IMAGES IN COMIC BOOKS--Feb. 13.  Denys Cowan, artist of the 
comic book ICON, has created heroic, intelligent African-American 
role models for the education and entertainment of people of all 
cultures.  Cowan will discuss No Laughing Matter: The Image of 
Minorities in Comic Books through a multi-media presentation at 7 
p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High St.

THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE AFRIKAN HAIR TO THE BODY AND SOUL--Feb. 13.  
Madame S. L Johnson, developer of a method of 'reading' hair to 
determine health status, will give a workshop on The Positive 
Relationship of the Afrikan Hair to the Body and Soul at 7 p.m. at 
the Hale Center, 153 W. 12th Ave.  Johnson, president of Paranice 
Hair Research Development Inc., hopes to raise the consciousness of 
Black women and increase self esteem by showing the political, 
social and cultural power of the hair styles from ancient time to 
the present.

UNITED BLACK WORLD MONTH--through Feb. 29.  Ohio State commemorates 
Black heritage in February with a variety of programs designed to 
celebrate the history and achievements of African Americans.  Among 
the activities: No Laughing Matter, The Images of Minorities in 
Comic Books, a lecture by Denys Cowan, creator of ICON for DC 
Comics, that deals with the identity and portrayal of African 
Americans in comic books, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union 
Conference Theater, 1739 N. High St.  
    Events at the Hale Center include Voices from the Village on 
Feb. 12, 19 and 26; Children's Cultural Hour, Feb., 13, 20, and 27; 
a brown bag lunch with Carlyle Brown, author of Yellow Moon Rising, 
Feb. 14 from noon to 2 p.m.: Black Miseducation, a workshop that 
examines the education of African people in America, Feb. 20, 7-8:30 
p.m.; and Media Assassination, a workshop to address contemporary 
media images of Black people, Feb. 27, 7-8:30 p.m.

LEARNING AT A DISTANCE--Tuesdays through Mar. 5.  Distance learning 
is already a reality at Ohio State University.  Designing such 
courses is the focus of a course that links students and faculty via 
video and audio on the Columbus and Marion campuses.  In Columbus, 
the class meets Tuesdays, 1:30-4:00 p.m., in the distance learning 
lab of the Center for the Advanced Study of Telecommunication 
(CAST), 3136 Derby Hall, 154 North Oval Mall.  In Marion, the class 
meets at GTE's distance learning lab.  After the interactive class, 
students continue communicating via e-mail and home pages.  The 
class is taught this quarter by Marge Cambre (Columbus) and Marv 
Bratt (Marion), faculty in the College of Education.

WETLAND BOARDWALK CONSTRUCTION--Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 
25.  Volunteers with carpentry and construction experience are 
needed to help construct a boardwalk at the Ohio State University 
Wetland Research Park, 352 Dodridge Rd.  Volunteers will work 9 
a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Saturdays or 1-4 p.m. Sundays.  Owens-Corning 
Corp. has donated recycled plastic lumber to the School of Natural 
Resources for the project; the Seabees will help with construction; 
and several Ohio building companies will provide supervision.
