on the Columbus campus.  We'll update this listing every week.

SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION--Feb. 16-17, 23-24.-Approximately 860 of the 
most academically gifted students in the country who have applied 
for freshman admission to Ohio State will be on campus to compete 
for 10 four-year "full ride" scholarships and 90 partial 
scholarships.  The sixth annual University Scholar Maximus 
competition (formerly called the Presidential and Medalist 
Scholarship Competition) will take place at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. 
High St. from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.  About one-fourth of 
the contestants will take part each of the four days.  Students will 
take a two-hour essay examination and attend information sessions 
with their parents.  Reporters are invited to attend any event 
except the examination.

OHIO STATE OPENS NEW VISITOR CENTER--Feb. 21.  The building that 
housed the university's first student union will be the new location 
of a welcome center to meet and greet some 30,000 prospective 
students, parents, family members, community groups and alumni who 
visit the university yearly.  Ohio State's Office of Admissions and 
Financial Aid will open a student visitors center in Enarson Hall, 
154 W. 12th Ave. (formerly the Student Services Building).  Located 
near the Oval at the heart of the campus, the center will house 
resources like admissions publications, promotional materials, 
admissions and financial aid publications, and class descriptions 
and provide walking tours of campus.

THE LATEST IN TECHNO-GADGETRY--Feb. 22.  Technology from Ohio 
State's College of Engineering and other areas will be on display at 
the Central Ohio Technology Exposition and Conference, 7:30 a.m.-7 
p.m., Hall C, Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St.  
The Exposition showcases technology from local schools, businesses 
and industry.  A Cyberlab will highlight the business uses of the 
Internet by providing a hands-on experience for visitors.

TEACHER RECRUITING FAIR-Feb. 23-25--The College of Education will 
host an International Recruiting Fair for people interested in K-12 
teaching positions around the globe.  Open Your Door to the World 
will take place at the University Ramada Inn, 3110 Olentangy River 
Road..

UNITED BLACK WORLD MONTH--through Feb. 29.  Ohio State commemorates 
Black heritage in February with a variety of programs designed to 
celebrate the history and achievements of African Americans.   
Events at the Hale Center include Voices from the Village on Feb.19 
and 26; Children's Cultural Hour, Feb.,20, and 27;: Black 
Miseducation, a workshop that examines the education of African 
people in America, Feb. 20, 7-8:30 p.m.; and Media Assassination, a 
workshop to address contemporary media images of Black people, Feb. 
27, 7-8:30 p.m.

LEARNING AT A DISTANCE--Tuesdays through Mar. 5.  Distance learning 
is already a reality at Ohio State University.  Designing such 
courses is the focus of a course that links students and faculty via 
video and audio on the Columbus and Marion campuses.  In Columbus, 
the class meets Tuesdays, 1:30-4:00 p.m., in the distance learning 
lab of the Center for the Advanced Study of Telecommunication 
(CAST), 3136 Derby Hall, 154 North Oval Mall.  In Marion, the class 
meets at GTE's distance learning lab.  After the interactive class, 
students continue communicating via e-mail and home pages.  The 
class is taught this quarter by Marge Cambre (Columbus) and Marv 
Bratt (Marion), faculty in the College of Education.

WETLAND BOARDWALK CONSTRUCTION--Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 
25.  Volunteers with carpentry and construction experience are 
needed to help construct a boardwalk at the Ohio State University 
Wetland Research Park, 352 Dodridge Rd.  Volunteers will work 9 
a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Saturdays or 1-4 p.m. Sundays.  Owens-Corning 
Corp. has donated recycled plastic lumber to the School of Natural 
Resources for the project; the Seabees will help with construction; 
and several Ohio building companies will provide supervision.
