PRESIDENT GEE HELPS PLANT A BUTTERFLY GARDEN--Apr. 26.  An overall-clad 
President Gee will help plant a butterfly garden at Medary Elementary
School, 2500 Medary St., at 10:30 a.m.  The planting kicks off the fourth
High on Pride University  Community Cleanup which will be held Saturday
9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  Gee will be joined by Mark Hatch, president of the
Columbus Board of Education; Larry Mixon, superintendent of Columbus Public
Schools; Ohio State students; community members and Medary students in
planting the 1,200 foot butterfly habitat.

HIGH ON PRIDE COMMUNITY CLEANUP--Apr. 27.   Some 2,000 Ohio State students, 
faculty, staff and community members are expected to  clean up the campus 
area.  Volunteers will work one of four shifts picking up litter, sweeping 
streets and sidewalks, collecting recyclables in the streets, and removing 
bulk trash in the neighborhood north of campus.  The area covers 135 city 
blocks with 50 miles of sidewalk and more than 30 miles of roadway.  The
area is bounded by Parkway Dr. on the north, Lane Ave. on the south, the
Olentangy River on the West, and the Conrail tracks on the east.  High on
Pride's first three efforts, in Oct. 1994 and May and Oct. 1995, removed 151
tons of trash and litter from the areas around campus.  For assistance in
covering the Cleanup, stop by the registration tables at the Jesse Owens
North Recreation Center, 2151 Neil Ave., between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.

OHIO STATE HOSTS WORKSHOP FOR SCIENCE TEACHERS--Apr. 27.  Central Ohio
middle school science teachers will attend a day-long workshop to learn
innovative ways of teaching physiology to students.  The workshop, Lessons
on the Physiology of Fitness and Neural Networks, is from 8:30 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science
Math Education, 1929 Kenny Rd.   This is a project sponsored by the American
Physiological Society and funded by the National Science Foundation.   The
workshop at Ohio State is a pilot performance prior to distribution by the
American Physiological Society to school systems throughout the U.S.

NCAA CERTIFICATION REVIEW--Apr. 28-May 1.   A five-member  external team of 
reviewers will conduct a  four-day evaluation visit as part of Ohio State's 
participation in the NCAA Division I Athletic Certification program.   
Athletic certification is a review program implemented in  1993 by the 
National Collegiate Athletic Association membership  for all Division I 
institutions. While academic accreditation is common in colleges and 
universities, this program is the first to focus on athletics.    Its
purpose is to ensure integrity in the institution's athletics  program.
Division I schools like Ohio State participate in athletic certification
every five years.    The process involves both self-study and external
review.   A decision on certification is not expected until fall 1996, at
the earliest.

AUCTION AND OPERA HIGHLIGHT ARTS CALENDAR--Apr. 26-May 3.  The Third Annual 
pARTners Auction, sponsored by pARTners for the Arts, The Ohio State 
University College of the Arts' community support group, will be held at
6:30 p.m., May 2 in the German Village Meeting House.  The OSU Jazz Ensemble
will perform, and celebrity auctioneers include athletic director/jazz
aficionado Andy Geiger.  The Department of Theatre presents Shakespeare's
The Comedy of Errors May 1-4, 8-11, and 15-18 in the Stadium II Theatre,
Drake Union, 1849 Cannon Dr.The Department of Dance presents a concert by
visiting artist and former faculty member Susan Van Pelt and the Repertory
Project of Cleveland at 8 p.m., Apr. 26 and 27 , Sullivant Theatre, 1813 N.
High St..The Ohio State University Opera/Music Theatre presents Mozart's
Marriage of Figaro, sung in Italian with supertitles on May 3, 7:30 p.m.,
and May 5 at 2:30 p.m. in Weigel Auditorium, 1866 College Rd.

POLAR RESEARCHERS DISCUSS CLIMATE--May 1.  Carbon Dioxide and Climate 
Revisited: The Story for the Last 20,000 Years is the topic of a seminar 
sponsored by the Byrd Polar Research Center.  The seminar is part of the 
Evening Seminar Series, which invites visiting scholars to discuss the role
of elements  in global climate.  James White, of the Department of
Geological Sciences, University of Colorado, will lead the seminar beginning
at 7:30 p.m., in Room 240, Scott Hall, 1090 Carmack Rd.

CEREMONY DEDICATES NEW  BUILDING WING--May 2.  The beautiful new addition to
Campbell Hall, home of the College of Human Ecology, will be dedicated in
ceremony at  4 p.m. in a tent in the parking lot of the building at 1787
Neil Ave.  The addition includes the Geraldine Schottenstein Wing for The
Historic Costume and Textiles Collection.

MEETING TO FOCUS ON DIVERSITY IN SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES--May 3.  Diversity
has become a popular word to describe the positive effects of differences in
ethnicity, race and gender.  But what does it mean exactly?  Ohio State will
host American Identity: Making Difference Work, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.  The forum for Ohio educators, business
professionals and other interested persons includes discussions of the
practical and beneficial ways to navigate difference to put it to work for
everyone's benefit.  John Bodnar, professor of history at Indiana
University, will give the keynote address, A History of Getting Along in
America.  Other sessions include Teaching Diversity: Making a Difference in
the Classroom and Investing in Difference: Valuing Diversity in the
Workplace and the World.  The event is sponsored by the College of
Humanities, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Ohio Humanities Council.

MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL--May 4.  The Medieval and Renaissance 
periods of history have long since passed, but Ohio State students and
faculty will keep the traditions alive at the 21st annual 'Ren-fest' on the
South Oval (12th Ave. and College Rd.).  The theme of this year's festival
is The War of the Roses.  The festival begins at 11 a.m. with a Grand
Processional through Mirror Lake Hollow.  Throughout the day, costumed
performers will entertain visitors with medieval swordfights, plays, a human
chessboard, dances, juggling, magic and music.  It's an afternoon of
laughter and merriment for the entire family--and it's free.

ASIAN AWARENESS MONTH--May 1-31.  Manifesting a new GenerAsian is the theme 
for the 1996 celebration at Ohio State. Throughout the month there will be 
panel discussions, dances, concerts, conferences and other activities.
Events  on May 2 include an Asian Food and Cultural Fair, 5-7 p.m. and a
Talent Showcase from 7-9 p.m. in the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.
