University Communication offers a new service for central Ohio news
organizations: a listing of potential news stories on the Columbus campus.  
We'll update this listing every other week.

YOUNG SCHOLARS ON THE FARM--Aug.8 and 10. The Ohio State University Young 
Scholars Program continues to bring pre-college Scholars to campus for
Summer Institutes.  This week, 235 seventh-and eighth- graders are getting
their first tastes of college classes and campus life. Scholars will explore 
agricultural careers with tours of the university's dairy farm and the 
livestock operation (with beef cattle, pigs, sheep and horses).  Urban youth 
have very little contact with agriculture, and these field trips will give
the Scholars a chance to see how agriculture and animal science operate.
120 seventh-graders will tour the Waterman Dairy Farm, 2433 Carmack Rd.,
Aug. 8, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.  120 eighth graders will tour the Livestock Complex,
3638 Kays Ave.(off  Sawmill and W.Case Rd.) Aug. 10, 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

THE OSU "SMOKIN' BUCKEYE" ELECTRIC CAR RACES AGAIN--Aug.17-19, Indianapolis 
Raceway Park.  Fresh from a first-place victory at the Cleveland Electric 
Formula Classic last month, the team will compete in the Second Electricore 
Formula Lightning race.  The "Smokin' Buckeye," designed, built and 
maintained by university engineering students, is powered by twin battery 
packs.  The car will be driven by champion driver Craig Taylor, who drove
the Buckeye entry to victory in the Inaugural Electricore Formula Lightning
race last year.  The electric race car is one of several experimental
vehicles being constructed and raced by students and faculty at the OSU
Center for Automotive Research.

COMPUTER PROGRAMS HELP ALZHEIMER PATIENTS-A team of Ohio State students has 
created a unique computer program for the Apple Design Project '95 
"Integrating the Physical and Virtual Environment."  The team designed a 
portable communication and activity system, based on the needs of
Alzheimer's patients and their professional caregivers, to encourage recall
and improve the quality of life for those with the disease.  Ohio State was
one of eight schools worldwide to participate in the Apple Computer
sponsored project to encourage creative thinking outside the boundaries of
real-world computer design.

INTERNATIONAL FOODS AT BUCKEYE VILLAGE COMMUNITY GARDEN--through August.
Fancy 'international food' selections in the grocery store have nothing on
the array grown by residents of Buckeye Village.  Most residents of this
university student housing are international students.  Their garden,
visible along Ackerman Rd. near the Child Care Center, reflects the foods
and agricultural methods of their homelands.
