Student Wins NEH Award

OHIO STATE STUDENT FROM GAHANNA NAMED YOUNGER SCHOLAR
     COLUMBUS -- Marcus Orin Jones, a resident of Gahanna and a
student at The Ohio State University, has received a Younger
Scholars Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
     Jones is the second Ohio State student in two years to
receive the honor.  Last year, Kate Mueller was recognized.
     The award consists of $2,500 to fund research work by an
undergraduate student.  The award is based on a proposal that the
undergraduate student submits on a topic previously unexplored in
the humanities.
     Jones will study German militarism and the historical and
political writings of Hans Delbruck, a German historian of the
late 19th and early 20th centuries.

     "By carefully examining the thought of one of Imperial
Germany's most prominent political commentators, I hope to enrich
and sharpen our understanding of one of the most consequential
eras in Germany history," Jones said in defining his award-
winning proposal.  He hopes to trace Delbruck's perception of the
ideology that contributed to the rise in militarism in Germany.

     He will study this summer with Williamson Murray, professor
of military history at Ohio State.

     Jones is one of 51 students in the United States to receive
the Younger Scholars Award this year.  He is a 1992 graduate of
Gahanna-Lincoln High School.
