Students Compete for Scholarships

NOTE TO EDITORS:  Ohio students are listed by county on the
attached pages, in Zip Code order.  We have included the same
counties that we use in mailing you our quarterly commencement
and honor roll lists.  Out-of-state students are listed by state.
Separate news releases will be sent to the hometown newspapers of
the 40 Presidential and Medalist Scholars after those students

HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS WIN $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS, COMPETE FOR MORE
     COLUMBUS -- Some 915 academically talented high school
seniors who have applied for admission to The Ohio State
University have been awarded $1,000 University Scholarships.
More than 700 of them recently chose to compete for 40 more
valuable awards.
     The 719 students who accepted the invitation to compete for
Presidential and Medalist Scholarships came to the Columbus
campus for a day in early March to take an essay examination.
They and their parents also took part in activities to acquaint
them with the university and its Honors program.
     A committee of Ohio State faculty members is now reviewing
the essays, along with a portfolio of other information for each
student, including high school grades, a 500-word personal
statement, and standardized test scores.
     Ten students will be offered Presidential Scholarships,
which include full in-state tuition, room and board, book
allowance and miscellaneous expenses -- valued at $10,275 this
year.  An additional 30 students will be offered Medalist
Scholarships, which cover the cost of in-state tuition -- this
year valued at $2,940.
     The Presidential and Medalist Scholarships incorporate the
$1,000 University Scholarships.  All three awards are renewable
for four years if the student maintains a 3.2 or better grade
point average and satisfactory academic progress.
     Students were selected for the University Scholarships from
among those who have applied by Jan. 15 for freshman admission to
Ohio State's Columbus campus for autumn quarter 1994.  In
general, they rank among the top 3 percent of their high school
classes and have ACT scores of 29 or higher or SAT scores of 1250
or higher.
     "These students have excelled academically in high school
and have great potential for future success," said Ohio State
President E. Gordon Gee.  "We look forward to welcoming them to
Ohio State in the fall.  They have much to offer this university,
and it has much to offer them.  I congratulate all of the
University Scholars who undertook the challenge of this rigorous
Presidential and Medalist Scholarship competition."
     Local University Scholars who chose to compete for the
Presidential and Medalist Scholarships are listed on the
following pages.
