Students demonstrate physics experiments at Ohio State Fair

Members of Sigma Pi Sigma, Ohio State’s undergraduate physics honor society, are trying to create interest in physics among children in the 4-H program at the Ohio State Fair.

In a booth set up in the Lausche Building, the group has arranged numerous experiments, from dropping balloons in liquid nitrogen to putting CD’s in a microwave oven.

The event is set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday (8/13) and Friday (8/15).

Each experiment is attended by a physics student who explains to the audience what is happening and why. Children are encouraged to take a hands-on approach by asking questions and even performing some additional tabletop demonstrations themselves with guidance from a physics student.
