Students take part in service activities during Mount Legacy Week

COLUMBUS – More than 100 students will take part in outreach projects as a part of Mount Legacy Week through May 18. Student groups from the Mount Leadership Society will focus on community service projects.

Mount Leadership Society students created teams that would take part in a variety of community projects they organized and designed.

In its fourth year, the Mount Leadership Society is an Ohio State scholars’ program, which teaches students the value of leadership and service.

The community service events planned during Mount Legacy Week are intended to honor the late Ruth Weimer Mount, who joined Ohio State in 1953 as the assistant to the dean of women. Mount was named the university’s first dean of students in 1968. During her career, she also served as president of the National Mortar Board, Inc., the Association of College Honor Societies, and the National Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors. Mount frequently volunteered in the Ohio State and Columbus communities to help improve the quality of life for others.

The events include:

• Wednesday, May 14 – Mount Scholars will teach students at Medary Elementary School about personal hygiene, nutrition and fitness. The event, for students in the after-school Boys and Girls Club program, will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Medary School gymnasium, 2500 Medary Ave.

• Thursday, May 15 – Mount Scholars taking part in a violence prevention program at Medary Elementary School. The event takes place from 4 to 5 p.m. at Medary Elementary School, 2500 Medary Ave.
