Ohio State hosts events for Suicide Prevention Week ‘Real World’ star, film to raise awareness of issue

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college-age students. Helping members of the university community recognize warning signs and know how to deal with a student in trouble is part of The Ohio State University Suicide Prevention Week, “Lifting Up Our Friend: Giving Hope and Help,” from Feb. 14 to Feb. 22.

Events of the week include an appearance by Julie from MTV’s “Real World (New Orleans),” 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19, in Room 131 of Hitchcock Hall, 2070 Neil Ave. This 20-year-old woman will discuss how suicide has touched her life and share with students how they can learn more about detecting warning signs in their friends and loved ones. A screening and guided discussion of the film “The Virgin Suicides,” directed by Sophia Coppola, is at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, in the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Theater, 1871 N. High St.
