Terry McMillan to Speak May 14

 "WAITING TO EXHALE" AUTHOR TERRY MCMILLAN TO SPEAK AT OHIO STATE

     COLUMBUS --  Waiting to Exhale author Terry McMillan will 
speak May 14 at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union ballrooms, 1739 N. High 
St., at the kick-off ceremonies for The Ohio State University's  
African American Heritage Festival May 14-18.

     McMillan will give a reading of her latest novel How Stella 
Got Her Groove Back and answer questions during an open-
microphone session.

     McMillan earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from 
the University of California at Berkeley and attended the Master 
of Fine Arts film program at Columbia University.

     Her first novel, Mama, received an American Book Award from 
the Before Columbus Foundation and has sold 1.2 million copies.  
Disappearing Acts, her second novel, sold 1.5 million copies and 
has been purchased by MGM Pictures.

     McMillan's third book, Waiting to Exhale, spent 38 weeks on 
The New York Times hard cover bestseller list and was adapted 
into a feature film starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett.  
McMillan co-wrote the screenplay and was executive producer of 
the film. 

     McMillan has been awarded a 1988 National Endowment for the 
Arts Fellowship in literature, a 1986 New York Foundation for the 
Arts Fellowship and the Doubleday/Columbia University Literary 
Fellowship.  She has taught creative writing at the University of 
Wyoming and the University of Arizona.  She now resides in San 
Francisco. 

     Admission for the reading is $4 with university 
identification, and $5 without.  Tickets can be purchased at the 
Ohio Union Newsstand and at the door.

     Other activities for the week-long festival include:

     -- A poetry slam May 15 in the Ohio Union Conference 
Theater, at 7 p.m.  Admission is $2.

     -- Crafts bazaar with a variety of Afro-centric art, T-
shirts, clothing and jewelry May 16 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the 
Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 W. 12th Ave., and 
May 17 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the west lawn of the Ohio Union. 

     -- The Heritage Festival May 18 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on 
the west lawn of the Ohio Union.  It will feature gospel, poetry, 
jazz, an African dance performance and a greek organizations step 
show.  Admission is free.
