The Ohio State University welcomes new public safety director

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University has named Monica Moll its new Department of Public Safety director following a national search. Moll brings more than 20 years of law enforcement experience to Ohio State, most recently serving as the director of public safety and chief of police at Bowling Green State University (BGSU).

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead Ohio State’s well-respected Department of Public Safety,” Moll said. “Ohio State has an outstanding legacy of protecting and serving the campus community and I look forward to carrying on the tradition through a combination of police, security, technology and key public safety partnerships.”

Moll becomes the ninth director of public safety at Ohio State and the second female to hold the position. Her two decades of experience include a focus on university policing and emergency management. Since joining BGSU in 2010, she accomplished key initiatives, such as:

  • Reorganizing the public safety department to allow for better supervision and accountability.
  • Forming a Public Safety Advisory Committee to facilitate feedback from the campus community.
  • Improving community relations by having officers interact with various student groups and community members.
  • Creating a more rigorous selection process for the hiring of new police officers.

“The safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors remains our No. 1 priority and we are confident Director Moll is the right choice to lead our dedicated public safety personnel,” said Jay Kasey, senior vice president of Ohio State’s Office of Administration and Planning. “She understands what it takes to manage a public safety team on a college campus and maintains strong relationships with local, state and federal law enforcement partners.”

Prior to joining BGSU in 2010, Moll worked at Kent State University, where she started as a police patrol officer in 1996 and worked her way up the ranks to lieutenant. Moll received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and her master’s degree from Kent State. In May 2016, she completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science at Kent State, which included a dissertation on police ethics training.

Moll’s appointment will be effective Oct. 31. She takes over following the retirement of former director Vernon Baisden, who retired from the university in April 2016 after 15 years of service.
