Three Named to Academic Leadership Roles

THREE SELECTED FOR KEY ROLES IN ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP

     COLUMBUS -- Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee
announced today (5/13) that he will formally recommend to the
Board of Trustees, at their June 3 meeting, the names of three
prominent deans to fill newly created academic leadership roles
at the university.

     The three are:

     =FE Manuel Tzagournis to the position of vice president for
health sciences.

     =FE Nancy Zimpher to the position of executive dean of the
professional colleges.

     =FE James Garland to the position of executive dean of the
Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.

     All three will serve as members of the President's Executive
Committee.

     If approved by the trustees, the three will assume the
positions on July 1.  They will serve at their current salaries,
subject to normal merit increases.

     Tzagournis presently is vice president for health services
and dean of the College of Medicine.  The position of vice
president for health services is being abolished under a
restructuring plan proposed by Provost Richard Sisson, which will
be considered by the trustees at their June meeting.  Tzagournis
will continue to serve as dean of the College of Medicine until a
new dean is named.

     Under the provost's restructuring plan, the vice president
for health sciences will be responsible for providing academic
and fiscal leadership for the colleges of Dentistry, Medicine,
Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine.

     Tzagournis is a professor of medicine in the Division of
Endocrinology and Metabolism at Ohio State.  Except for a one-
year internship and two years in the U.S. Army, he has been
affiliated with Ohio State since arriving as an undergraduate in
1952.  He received his B.S., M.D. and M.S. degrees from Ohio
State.

     As executive dean of the professional colleges, Zimpher will
have responsibility for coordinating the complementary activities
of the colleges of Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Human
Ecology, Law and the Max M. Fisher College of Business.  She will
have responsibility for encouraging the development and
coordination of intercollege curricular and program initiatives.

     Zimpher earned her B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio
State and is currently dean of the College of Education.  She
holds an academic appointment as a professor in the Department of
Educational Policy and Leadership.

     In his position as executive dean of the Colleges of the
Arts and Sciences, Garland will have responsibility for
encouraging the development and coordination of intercollege
curricular and program initiatives within the five member
colleges of the arts and sciences: Arts, Biological Sciences,
Humanities, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Social and
Behavioral Sciences.  He will also have line management
responsibilities for the University Honors Program, the
university's three ROTC units, and the Office of Undergraduate
Studies in the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.

     Garland is a professor of physics and dean of the College of
Mathematical and Physical Sciences.  He received an A.B. degree
=66rom Princeton University and a Ph.D. degree from Cornell
University.

     "I am absolutely delighted with the caliber of individuals
we have ready to step in and provide additional academic
leadership to the university at this critical time," Gee said.
"These individuals have the vision and skills to further enhance
our reputation as one of the nation's premier teaching and
research institutions."

     Provost Sisson echoed Gee's remarks: "Dr. Tzagournis, Dr.
Zimpher and Dr. Garland enjoy the highest respect and confidence
of their peers, both at Ohio State and nationwide.  We are indeed
fortunate to be able to call upon their experience and wisdom at
this significant time in the university's history."
