OSU trustees accept new funds, approve appointments

COLUMBUS The Ohio State University Board of Trustees accepted more than $1.6 million in gifts to the university to establish named endowed funds at its meeting on Friday (6/1). The board also accepted 196 research grants and contracts, totaling $20 million.

In other business, the board approved personnel actions, construction projects and several amendments to university documents.

Named endowed funds

The Howell Family Scholarship Fund, $446,489, established with gifts from the estate of the late William B. Howell (B.S. Soc. Adm., 1940) and Marcia Howell and family of TROY, to provide scholarships to student athletes on the varsity swimming team.
The William G. Myers, M.D., Ph.D., and Florence Lenahan Myers, M.D. Radiation Oncology Research Endowment Fund, $443,500, established with a gift from the estate of Florence L. Myers, M.D., to support research in the Comprehensive Cancer Center The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
The Thekla R. and Donald B. Shackelford Professorship Fund in Canine Medicine, $250,000, established with a gift from Thekla R. (M. A. Education, 1969) and Donald B. Shackelford, to provide a professorship to be held by an eminent faculty member in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
The University Library History of Astronomy Fund, $140,778, established with a gift from the estate of Philip C. Keenan, professor emeritus in the Department of Astronomy to purchase early astronomical books and other materials pertaining to the history of astronomy.
The Ross-Hocking Extension 4-H Camp Association, Inc. Endowment Fund, $50,000, established with gifts from the association and friends, to enhance and foster further development of the resources and camping programs.
The Eleanor Quinlan Memorial Fund, $35,031, established with gifts from friends, former students and colleagues of the late Eleanor Quinlan (M.S., 1985), for development and recognition of outstanding graduate teaching associates within the department.
The Calvin and Lydia Roebuck Athletic Scholarship Fund, $33,820, established with gifts from friends, family and colleagues of the Roebuck family to supplement the student-athlete grant-in-aid scholarship costs of members of the football team.
Ohio State ATI Founders and Friends Award Fund, $32,692, established with miscellaneous gifts to help support eligible OSU Agricultural Technical Institute students.
Moore Family Scholarship Fund, $30,000, established with gifts to the Office of Student Financial Aid from James Moore (B.A., 1967; J.D., 1070) and Diane Moore (B.A., 1979; J.D., 1982) from HIGHLAND PARK, ILL., to provide one or more need-based scholarships for undergraduates in the top 10 of their graduating class.
The Marie Cummins Curtin Scholarship Fund in Pharmacy, $29,545, established with a gift from the Curtin family of COLUMBUS to provide one or more scholarships to deserving pharmacy students.
The Frank W. Bope Legends of Pharmacy Scholarship Fund, $26,050, established with gifts from Ohio State pharmacy alumni, friends, colleagues, industrial partners, corporate foundations, private foundations and family members to provide one or more scholarships to qualified professional students in the College of Pharmacy.
The Dr. Robert D. Berkebile Memoral Award Fund in Radiology, $25,000, established with gifts in memory of Robert D. Berkebile (M.D., 1939) by his wife Marian Miller Berkebile of FORT MYERS, FLA. To support student awards in the Department of Radiology.
The Leslie Cribley Memorial University Scholar Fund, $25,000, established with a gift from E. Marie Cribley of SEATTLE, WASH., in memory of her husband, Leslie Cribley (M.A., Education, 1938) to provide one of more merit scholarships for students who qualify as University Scholars, with preference to those studying music.
The OSU Alumni Club of Phoenix Scholarship Fund, $25,000, established with a gift from the club to provide merit scholarships for Phoenix-area students.
The OSU Army ROTC Alumni Scholarship Fund, $21,121 (grandfathered), established with a gift from the Army ROTC Alumni Society.
The board approved a change in the description of The John G. and Zoe Johnstone Endowed Fund for Musicology, established in August 2000.

Personnel actions

James J. Brudney of WORTHINGTON, has been named to the Newton D. Baker Baker & Hostetler Chair in Law, effective Aug. 1, 2001. Brudney, a professor of law, received a B.A. from Amherst College, a B.A. an M.A. from Oxford University and a J.D. from Yale University. He was elected Outstanding Law Professor of the Year by the College of Laws Class of 1996.
Charles C. Capen of WESTERVILLE has been named a Distinguished University Professor of Veterinary Biosciences, effective June 1, 2001. Capen, professor and departmental chair holds a D.V.M. from Washington State University in Pullman, a Ph.D. from Ohio State and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
Mauro Ferrari of DUBLIN has been named to The Edgar C. Hendrickson Designated Chair in Biomedical Engineering, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006. Ferrari is director of Ohio States Biomedical Engineering Center, professor of internal medicine (oncology) and professor of mechanical engineering. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
William H. Hall of MT. VERNON has been named vice president for student affairs, effective June 1. 2001. Hall, who joined the university in 1977, has been serving in the position on an interim basis since last June. He was named assistant vice president for student affairs in 1994 where he provided strategic direction for the Department of Housing, Food Services and Event Centers. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in education from Southern Illinois University and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College. Hall retired in 1998 from the Ohio Army National Guard with the rank of brigadier general.
Sheldon W. Halpern has been named to The C. William ONeill Professorship in Law and Judicial Administration, effective Aug. 1, 2001. Halpern holds B.A. and L.L.B. degrees from Cornell University and is a member of the American Law Institute.
Elizabeth R. Lenz has been named dean and professor in the College of Nursing, effective Sept. 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006. Lenz is currently professor and associate dean for research and doctoral studies at Columbia Universitys School of Nursing. She has held faculty positions at Boston College, Georgetown University, University of Maryland and Pennsylvania State University. She earned her B.S. from DePauw University, her M.S. from Boston College and her Ph.D. from the University of Delaware.
Matthew S. Platz of COLUMBUS (43235) has been named a Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry, effective June 1, 2001. Platz, Newman Professor of Chemistry, received his B.S. degree from the State University of New York at Albany and his Ph.D. degree from Yale University. He is the recipient of an Ohio State Distinguished Scholar Award and the College of the Arts and Sciences Teaching Award.
Bert A. Rockman has been named director of the School of Public Policy and Management, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005. Rockman is currently University Professor of Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh. His other appointments at Pittsburgh include research professor at the University Center for International Studies, University Professor at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs and director of the Center for American Politics and Society. He is also a non-resident senior research fellow in the governmental studies program at the Brookings Institution. Rockman holds an A.B. from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
Joseph A. Alutto of COLUMBUS (43235) has been reappointed executive dean of professional colleges, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2004.
Carole A. Anderson of COLUMBUS (43201) has received an extension of term as dean of the College of Nursing, effective July 1, 2001, through Aug. 31, 2001.

Construction projects

The board authorized the employment of architect/engineering firms and request for construction bids for the following:

Hayden Hall renovation on the OARDC campus upgrade existing laboratories, refurbish office spaces, install a new elevator, install new central HVAC system and reconstruct restroom facilities. Total estimated project cost is $850,000 and total estimated construction cost is $690,000 with funding provided by House Bill 790 ($100,000) and OARDC funds ($750,000).
Vivian Hall renovation to accommodate temporarily a portion of the Knowlton School of Architecture now housed in Ives Hall, scheduled for demolition in order to use the site for construction of the new architecture school. Total estimated project cost is $305,000 and total estimated construction cost is $261,000 with funding provided by the Knowlton School of Architecture ($152,500) and central university funds ($152,500).
Central Classroom Building roof replacement. Total estimated project cost is $109,407 and total estimated construction cost is $81,103 with funding provided by the Office of Physical Facilities ($38,953) and the Office of Facilities Planning and Development ($70,453).
Denney Hall classroom renovation. Revised estimated project cost is $1,068,435 and total estimated construction cost is $508,117 with funding provided by House bills 748, 790, 850 and 904 and Classroom Pool and Honor Program funding.

Faculty Rules amended

The board approved amendments to the Rules of the University Faculty designed to specify who at Ohio State may propose alterations to or elimination of academic units, to codify a process for undertaking these changes and to assign decision-making responsibilities as such proposals move forward. Amendments to wording of the Bylaws of the University Senate were also approved.

Dental Practice Plan accepted

The board accepted an impact statement of the Intramural Dental Practice Plan, centering on changes in the practice organization from a relationship of independent contractors to that of employee-employer.

Classified Civil Service Rules amended

The board approved amendments to the Classified Civil Service Rules to bring them into compliance with current state and federal laws and to enable the implementation of university initiatives and improvements in efficiency.

Cancer Hospital bylaws amended

The board also approved amendments to the bylaws of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute Board regarding the boards composition.
