ACTIONS OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees 
on Friday (12/1) appointed faculty to endowed positions in 
law and obstetrics and gynecology, and named a student 
member to The Ohio State University-Lima Board of Trustees.  
The board also named the plant and pest diagnostic clinic, 
Dodd Hall library, and the sports arena, and conducted other 
business.

Huntington appointed acting Vice Provost 

The board appointed Susan L. Huntington of 
WORTHINGTON, acting dean of the Graduate School, as acting 
vice provost for graduate studies in the Office of Academic 
Affairs retroactive to Dec. 1.

Richard Sisson, senior vice president for academic 
affairs and provost, said Huntington will serve as acting 
vice provost in addition to her duties as acting dean.

"As acting vice provost, Dr. Huntington will become a 
member of the President's Executive Committee and will join 
the other vice provosts in working closely with me on the 
full range of academic matters under the purview of the 
Office of Academic Affairs" Sisson said.

As acting vice provost, Huntington will be responsible 
for identifying and implementing changes in Graduate School 
policies and procedures, in accordance with principles and 
recommendations of the Graduate School Review Committee.  
The committee recently completed a review of the 
administrative structure of the Graduate School and its 
activities with other major units of the university.

Iams holds Zuspan Professorship In Obstetrics and Gynecology

The board named Jay D. Iams of COLUMBUS (43221), 
professor of obstetrics and gynecology, to the Frederick P. 
Zuspan Professorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology, 
retroactive to Oct. 1.

Iams received his Bachelor of Science degree in 
political science and his medical degree from the University 
of Wisconsin, Madison.  He held a pediatrics residency at 
Phoenix Hospitals Affiliated Pediatric Program in Phoenix, 
Ariz., and his obstetrics and gynecology residency at The 
Ohio State University Hospitals.  Iams has taught at the 
university since 1979.

The Zuspan Professorship was established in 1992 by 
Professor Emeritus Frederick P. Zuspan to support a faculty 
chair in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Krauskopf named to Presidents Club Professorship in Law

Trustees appointed Joan M. Krauskopf of COLUMBUS 
(43214), professor of law, to The Presidents Club 
Professorship in Law retroactive to Nov. 1.

Krauskopf received her undergraduate degree from Ohio 
University and her Juris Doctor degree from Ohio State.  She 
has taught at the university since 1987.  Krauskopf 
specializes in family law, torts, elder law, and social 
legislation.  She serves as co-editor in chief of The Ohio 
State Law Journal.

The Presidents Club Professorship in Law was 
established in 1979 by members of The Presidents Club who 
are alumni and friends of the College of Law to support the 
work of a distinguished scholar and teacher in the college.

Rogers new Platt - Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur Professor

Trustees appointed Nancy H. Rogers of COLUMBUS (43221), 
associate dean and professor of law, to the Joseph S. Platt 
- Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur Professorship in Law, 
retroactive to Nov. 1. 

Rogers, a specialist in alternative dispute resolution, 
has taught at Ohio State since 1975.   She earned her 
Bachelor of Arts degree in social work from the University 
of Kansas and her Juris Doctor degree from Yale University.  
She serves as vice chair of the board of directors of the 
Legal Services Corp. and as co-chair of the editorial board 
of Dispute Resolution magazine.

The Joseph S. Platt - Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur 
Professorship in Law was established in 1980 with gifts from 
several individuals to support the work of a distinguished 
scholar and teacher in the College of Law.

Green appointed to The Ohio State University-Lima Board

The board appointed Troy Green of RUSSELLS POINT, a 
senior majoring in psychology, as a student member of The 
Ohio State University-Lima Board of Trustees.

A graduate of Benjamin Logan High School, Green served 
in the U.S. Army as a military policeman for six years and 
received an honorable discharge in March 1992.  He is a 
member of the Student Senate where he served as vice 
president last year.

Sports Arena Named The Schottenstein Center

The board named Ohio State's new convocation, sports 
and multi-purpose center as the "Schottenstein Center" to 
reflect the long and distinguished tradition of 
philanthropy, service and dedication to the community and 
Ohio State by the Schottenstein family.  The Schottenstein 
family, the Schottenstein Stores Corp. and Value City Stores  
contributed $12.5 million, the third largest gift ever 
received by the university, toward the construction of the 
arena.

Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic named for C. Wayne Ellett

Trustees named Ohio State's plant and diagnostic clinic 
as the "C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic" to 
reflect the contributions of Ellett to the university, his 
expertise in plant disease diagnosis and his establishment 
of the Plant Disease Clinic.

A professor emeritus, Ellett served on the faculty of 
Ohio State for more than 40 years as a professor in both 
botany and plant pathology.

Dodd Hall Library named for Richard Stow

The board named Ohio State's Dodd Hall library as the 
"Richard W. Stow Memorial Library" in memory of Stow's 
distinguished career as a biophysicist the College of 
Medicine.

Stow was a Fulbright lecturer and known for his 
innovations in electromygraphic instrumentation.  He was 
recognized for his contributions to clinical chemistry, 
involving research in the measurement of blood flow and 
chemistry in tissues.

Resolutions in Memoriam

The board adopted resolutions in memoriam for:

-- Francis R. Aumann, professor emeritus in the 
Department of Political Science, who died Oct. 2.
-- Clyde W. Franklin II, professor emeritus in the 
Department of Sociology, who died Oct. 25. 
-- Miriam Mooney, professor emeritus in the School of 
Music, who died Oct. 9.

Other business

In other actions, trustees:

-- Discussed with Nancy M. Rudd, vice provost, and 
Edward F. Hayes, vice president for research, outside 
professional services by faculty members.

-- Heard in the Educational Affairs Committee a report 
by Sisson on the Ohio Board of Regents' draft master plan 
for higher education. The plan, when finalized, will be the 
foundation for colleges and universities in Ohio.  Sisson 
expressed concern about the plan's lack of specificity and 
lack of inclusion of the role of university trustees. 
Committee members agreed that the draft needs revisions and 
that it is important for Ohio State's trustees to voice 
concerns to the Regents during meetings being held 
throughout the state.

-- Heard a committee report from Robert Arnold, vice 
provost, on distance learning at Ohio State.  Arnold cited 
several examples of long-distance teaching via television 
and computer technology and discussed the potential to do 
more in that area.

-- Presented a student recognition award to Christian 
Zawodniak of UPPER ARLINGTON.  A sophomore majoring in 
English and French, Zawodniak is a leader in the 
undergraduate English Forum.  He was honored for his work as 
a tutor of students enrolled in English 110W and his work as 
a volunteer for the AIDS Service Connection.

-- Amended the Rules of the University Faculty to have 
the vice chairperson of the Council on Academic Affairs be 
elected from the membership of the council.
