TRUSTEES APPROVE SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS, ACCEPT NAMED ENDOWED FUNDS

COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on 
Friday (7/10) approved several appointments and accepted 14 new 
named endowed funds.
Ray appointed interim senior vice president and provost

The board appointed Edward J. Ray of UPPER ARLINGTON as 
interim senior vice president and provost, effective Sept. 1.  
Ray will succeed Richard Sisson, who will return to the faculty, 
where he is a professor of political science.  Ray, currently 
senior vice provost and chief information officer, served as 
acting senior vice president and provost from Dec. 15, 1997, 
until July 1.  He has been a faculty member at Ohio State since 
1970 and chaired the Department of Economics from 1976 until 
1992, when he joined the Office of Academic Affairs as an 
associate provost.  He has been senior vice provost since 1993. 

Sisson named to Board of Trustees Chair in Comparative Politics

Trustees appointed Richard Sisson of UPPER ARLINGTON, senior 
vice president and provost, to the Board of Trustees Chair in 
Comparative Politics, effective Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2003.  
Sisson is stepping down from the provost position on Aug. 31 to 
return to the faculty.  Sisson, who served as interim president 
from Dec. 15, 1997, to July 1, also will serve as senior adviser 
to the president.  A graduate of Ohio State, Sisson returned to 
his alma mater to assume the provost's duties on Aug. 1, 1993, 
after 25 years as a faculty member and administrator at the 
University of California, Los Angeles.  He is an internationally 
known expert on Asian politics and international affairs, and 
plans to resume his scholarly work on political and economic 
change in South Asia and the challenges to international strategy 
occasioned by recent events in India and Pakistan.  

The Board of Trustees Chair in Comparative Politics was 
established in December 1997 to support a distinguished teacher 
and scholar in the Department of Political Science whose 
interests focus on one or more areas of comparative politics, 
especially involving democratic politics and governance.

Interim College of Education dean appointed

The board approved Daryl L. Siedentop's appointment as 
interim dean of the College of Education, effective July 1 
through June 30, 1999.  Siedentop, of WESTERVILLE, has been 
senior associate dean since 1995 and professor of sport and 
exercise sciences since 1976.  He is one of the world's leading 
authorities on sport education for children and youth, and is its 
most influential scholar in the analysis of teaching 
effectiveness in physical activity settings.  Siedentop joined 
the College of Education faculty in 1970 after 10 years at Hope 
College.

Faculty and administrative appointments and reappointments

Trustees appointed J. Layne Moore of UPPER ARLINGTON, 
assistant professor of neurology, to the Richard J. and Martha D. 
Denman Professorship for Clinical Research in Epilepsy, effective 
July 1 through June 30, 2002.  The professorship was established 
in 1995 to support the work of a distinguished researcher, 
teacher and practitioner in the College of Medicine and Public 
Health.

The board reappointed the following administrators and 
faculty:

-- Barbara Rich of COLUMBUS (43231), interim vice provost 
for minority affairs, effective July 1 through June 30, 1999.

-- Gerald M. Reagan of WESTERVILLE, secretary of the 
University Senate, effective Oct. 1, 1998, through Sept. 30, 
2001.

-- Jay B. Barney of WESTERVILLE to the Bank One Chair for 
Excellence in Corporate Strategy in the Max M. Fisher College of 
Business, effective Oct. 1, 1998, through Sept. 30, 2003.

-- Frederick H. Davidorf of JOHNSTOWN to the Martha G. and 
Milton Staub Chair for Research in Ophthalmology, effective July 
1 through June 30, 2002.

-- M. Ronald Glaser to the Gilbert and Kathryn Mitchell 
Chair in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective 
July 1 through June 30, 2002. 

-- Calvin M. Kunin of UPPER ARLINGTON to the Frank E. and 
Mary W. Pomerene Professorship in the Prevention and Treatment of 
Infectious Diseases in the College of Medicine and Public Health, 
effective July 1 through June 30, 2002.

The board appointed Peter D. March of UPPER ARLINGTON as 
chair of the Department of Mathematics, effective July 1 through 
June 30, 2002.

Trustees also appointed William F. Saam of UPPER ARLINGTON 
as chair of the Department of Physics, effective Oct. 1, 1998, 
through Sept. 30, 2002.

Trustees appointed five interim department chairs with terms 
effective July 1 through June 30, 1999:

-- Michael B. Howie of UPPER ARLINGTON, Anesthesiology.
-- Robert M. DePhilip of WESTERVILLE, Cell Biology, 
Neurobiology and Anatomy.
-- Susan King Roth of UPPER ARLINGTON, Industrial, Interior

Regional campus appointment/reappointments

Trustees approved the reappointment of Dan E. Fuhrman and 
Jaye E. McCain to three-year terms on the Ohio State University 
Lima Board. 

Robert A. Barnes, Thomas A. Brannon and Earl Shurtz were 
reappointed to three-year terms, and Kori Pittman (student 
trustee) to a one-year term, all on the Ohio State University 
Newark Board.

New student trustee Jennifer E. Unruh, an elementary 
education major at the Mansfield campus, was appointed to a one-
year term on the Ohio State University Mansfield Board.

Board accepts 14 new named endowed funds

 The board heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for 
development, on fund-raising efforts, including the establishment 
of the Earl K. Peters and Elizabeth Peters Loan Fund.  Gifts of 
$387,500 from the estate of Earl K. Peters were used to establish 
the fund, which will provide interest-free loans to professional, 
graduate and undergraduate students at the discretion of the 
Office of Student Financial Aid.

May also reported on the establishment of 13 other named 
endowed funds with gifts totaling more than $580,000.

-- The C.A.P. Fund in Health Services Management and Policy, 
$30,000, to provide scholarships and general support to the 
Division of Health Services Management and Policy.

-- The Business History Fund, $27,644, to support teaching 
and research in business history.

-- The William and Shirley Shapero Scholarship Fund, 
$251,159, to provide scholarships in the College of Medicine and 
Public Health.

-- The Michael M. and Doris Boich Diabetes Education and 
Research Fund, $40,000, to support medical education, research 
and programs in the field of diabetes.

-- The Wayne and Emeline Boich Cancer Education and Research 
Fund, $40,000, to support breast cancer education and research at 
the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute.

-- The John W. Nelson & Arthur Tye Graduate Endowed Fund in 
Pharmacology, $26,000, to provide graduate student stipends in 
the Division of Pharmacology.

-- The Carl E. Bentz Architectural Scholarship Fund, 
$25,000, to provide scholarships in the Knowlton School of 
Architecture in honor of Carl E. Bentz.

-- The Michael and Doris Boich Medical Research Fund, 
$25,000, to support research in the Medical Research Facility. 

-- The Wayne and Emeline Boich Medical Research Fund, 
$25,000, to support research in the Medical Research Facility.

-- The Donald G., M.D., and Patsy P. Jones Fund in 
Obstetrics and Gynecology, $25,000, to support a lectureship in 
the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

-- The Robert A. Liebert Family Athletic Scholarship Fund, 
$25,000, to provide tennis scholarships.

-- The William L. Pritchard Football Scholarship Fund, 
$25,000.

-- The Wendell A. Weller Merit Scholars Award Fund in 
Medicine, $16,716, to provide scholarships in the College of 
Medicine and Public Health.
