Trustees Approve Construction + Renovation Projects
OHIO STATE TO START SEVERAL MAINTENANCE, RENOVATION PROJECTS
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees
Friday (12/2) authorized officials to employ architectural and
engineering firms and request construction bids for a Parks Hall
addition, several sports fields, and dozens of smaller renovation
projects.
The Parks Hall addition will house a pharmaceutical care
center, clinical faculty offices, meeting rooms, and a connector
mall. In addition, several labs will be renovated in Parks, 500
W. 12th Ave., home of the College of Pharmacy.
The state and college will fund the project, estimated at
$1.45 million, including $1.16 million in construction.
The sports fields will be constructed on 38 acres south of
Lane Avenue and west of Kenny Road. The facilities will enable
continuation of intramural programs that use the King Avenue
playing fields. Those fields are the site of planned ramps
connecting Ninth and 12th avenues with Ohio 315.
The new fields will include two multi-purpose spaces
containing eight softball and baseball fields, eight flag
football fields and two multi-purpose spaces for sports club
practices, contests, and tournaments.
Total estimated construction cost is $3.5 million; funding
is to be provided by future bond proceeds. Project approval is
subject to a memorandum of understanding to be entered into by
the offices involved.
The smaller projects make up Ohio State's 1995 anticipated
small capital improvement projects for campuses in Columbus,
Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster. The projects range
in estimated costs from $22,000 to $950,000; most are $500,000 or
less. The projects are:
COLUMBUS
Campus-wide:
-- Install two restrooms, to comply with Americans with
Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, in Archer House, Boyd Lab,
Graves Hall, Hayes Hall, Independence Hall, the Journalism
Building, Koffolt Lab, Newton Hall, Postle Hall, and the
Veterinary Hospital.
-- Provide handrails, to comply with ADA standards, at
building entrances and other exterior ramps and steps at more
than 100 locations.
-- Build wheelchair access and accessible seating space in
lecture halls in Evans Lab, Goss Lab, Parks Hall, Smith Lab, and
Vivian Hall.
-- Replace 33 emergency telephones and install 92 new
emergency telephones to enhance security.
-- Replace outside campus lighting with more efficient
lights to improve safety.
-- Replace deteriorated sidewalks.
-- Modernize elevators in various buildings to comply with
ADA standards.
-- Install or upgrade fume hoods to address ventilation
problems in various scientific laboratories and comply with
Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules.
-- Retrofit light fixtures in Baker Systems, Evans Lab, and
Smith Lab with energy efficient tubes.
-- Improve storm sewers for draining water from 18th and
19th Avenues along the Neil Avenue corridor to Woody Hayes Drive
and complete the 18th Avenue mallway.
Arps Hall -- Replace windows with double-pane insulated
windows; renovate lab rooms on lower level to accommodate modern
instructional technologies (two projects).
Biological Sciences -- Modernize four elevators, including
emergency features and devices required by ADA.
Botany and Zoology Building -- Renovate former library space
to house foreign language offices.
Bricker Hall -- Renovate space in basement and first floor
for administrative use; install a water system to serve the
entire building (two projects).
Byrd Polar Research Center -- Provide an Antarctic Rock
Library for paleontological and geological specimens, and a
Sediment Core Archival Cold Room for Russian and American Arctic
sediment cores and related equipment (two projects).
Campbell Hall -- Replace roof, windows, wood entrance doors
and metal stairwell doors (two projects).
Carmack Road -- Reconstruct the failed roadway base and
resurface the road from its north end to Kenny Road.
Cockins Hall -- Provide building entrance and elevator
accessible by wheelchair.
Converse Hall -- Provide an elevator accessible by
wheelchair.
Denney Hall -- Replace roof.
Dulles Hall -- Replace roof and repair coping, flashing, and
lightning arrestor system.
Fontana Lab -- Replace chiller.
Fry Hall -- Upgrade teaching facilities to support modern
optometric training and to accommodate the increased use of
pharmaceutical and advanced instrumentation.
Haskett Hall -- Replace roof.
Haskett and Hopkins Halls -- Renovate space to house
photography and printmaking and provide additional teaching
studios and laboratories.
Hopkins Hall -- Replace chiller.
Hitchcock Hall -- Upgrade the heating, ventilating and air
conditioning system.
Ives and Stillman halls -- Provide heating, ventilating and
air conditioning and other upgrades for various lecture halls and
classrooms.
Jesse Owens Recreation Centers -- Install new heating
system, lighting, restrooms, and floor finishes, and paint.
Larkins Hall -- Provide wheelchair-accessible showers and
restrooms at four locations, an accessible route to the fourth
floor, and ramping and enclosed walkway to room 330, to comply
with ADA; replace exterior doors and rebuild curtain walls;
upgrade heating, ventilating and air conditioning system; remove
deteriorated concrete at support columns of the diving pool,
diving tower, shower areas, pool walls, and floor expansion
joints (four projects).
Lincoln Tower -- Upgrade and modernize elevators, bring
elevators in compliance with ADA and code.
Mendenhall Lab -- Convert vacant space in attic into offices
and graduate student space to temporarily house operations during
other renovations.
Ohio Stadium -- Renovate space in the Behavioral Science Lab
and upgrade mechanical system.
Pomerene Hall -- Replace outmoded wiring and light fixtures
to meet energy efficiency standards.
Postle Hall -- Renovate and upgrade lecture halls; replace
roof; repair or replace deteriorated, leaking windows throughout
the building (three projects).
Ramseyer Hall -- Replace roof and gutter, deteriorated
plumbing and restroom (two projects).
Research Center Building -- Refurbish areas damaged by roof
leaks; replace chiller and air conditioning condenser systems
(two projects).
Robinson Lab -- Replace failing smoke stack.
Sisson Hall -- Replace roof.
South Polo Field Addition Parking Lot -- Provide better
drainage and new lighting and pave the lot.
Starling-Loving Hall -- Improve heating, ventilating, and
air conditioning system in A Wing; provide ADA-compliant patient
care and teaching areas for Low Vision/Geriatric Vision
Rehabilitation; modernize elevator equipment to meet ADA
standards (three projects).
Thompson Memorial Library -- Replace window framing and
glazing on south and north sides; replace caulking and waterproof
all elevations; renovate heating, ventilating, and air
conditioning for basement rooms (three projects).
Welding Engineering -- Replace roof.
West Campus -- Modify service lines, transformers, and
switchgears to accommodate increased demand for electricity.
Wiseman Hall -- Renovate floor space used by Laboratory
Animal Resources.
LIMA
Campus Drive -- Replace road surface, widen from one-lane to
two-lane entrance to student parking lot.
MANSFIELD
Campus-wide -- Rebuild catch basins, drains, and underground
pipes.
Conard Art Gallery -- Install independent air conditioning
to maintain proper temperature and humidity.
Eisenhower Hall -- Provide new air conditioning system.
MARION
Campus-wide:
=FE Provide signs complying with ADA.
=FE Replace worn asphalt surfaces of roads and sidewalks;
replace outside safety lighting fixtures.
Morrill Hall -- Replace floor finishes in various rooms on
the first three floors, paint walls, replace cove base.
NEWARK
Campus-wide -- Provide doors, restrooms, and ramps in Adena
Hall, the Child Development Center, Founders Hall and Hopewell
Hall to comply with ADA.
Founders Hall -- Replace chiller.
AGRICULTURAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, WOOSTER
Campus-wide -- Install drainage tile and culverts and add
limestone to selected farm roads.
Learning Assistance Center -- Install new ceilings and
lights, carpet, wall finishes, signs, and modular furnishings;
upgrade electrical and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning
systems.
Skou Hall -- Replace roof, finish unfinished spaces in the
building.
OHIO AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER (OARDC),
WOOSTER
Campus-wide:
=FE Upgrade heating, ventilating and air conditioning.
=FE Replace roofs on Agricultural Engineering Building,
Gerlaugh Hall and 10 other buildings.
Dairy and Beef barns -- Replace concrete slats and fencing;
improve ventilation.
Fisher Auditorium -- Improve interior to comply with ADA.
Gerlaugh Hall -- Improve accessibility and interior to
comply with ADA.
Gourley Hall -- Improve accessibility and interior to comply
with ADA.
Secrest Arboretum -- Stabilize stream bed and bank, add
erosion control structures, repair and stabilize roads and paths,
install diversions and culverts to control water runoff.
Selby Hall -- Replace chiller.
Swine Isolation Building -- renovate.
OARDC, WOOD COUNTY
Northwestern Branch -- Upgrade entrance and service drives,
remove crib and storage building, replace buried fuel storage
tanks with above-ground tanks.
Contracts, Contingency Funds Approved
Trustees approved contracts and contingency funds for
projects on the Columbus, Newark, and Wooster campuses, (funded
by the state unless noted otherwise) and for projects funded by
University Hospitals:
COLUMBUS
The Center for Automotive Research -- The back of the
building at 930 Kinnear Road was renovated for use by the center
and to comply with building code and the ADA. Contractors were
Gutknecht Construction of Columbus, J.A. Croson of Columbus,
Columbus Heating and Ventilating, and MCS Electric of Groveport.
Ohio State funded the $278,500 project.
The Chadwick Arboretum -- George Igel of Columbus
constructed a lake between Ohio 315 and Fyffe Road last summer.
The Department of Physical Facilities funded the $262,600
project.
Independence Hall -- Good Home Maintenance and Romanoff
Electric of Columbus remodeled the lecture hall this year by
adding new seat pads and upholstery, new carpet, and audio-visual
equipment. Total cost was $278,200.
Integrated Central Alarm Monitor -- Acree Daily of Columbus
replaced and upgraded the fire alarm and monitoring system in
September. Total cost was $510,600.
Law Building -- P & H Roofing will replace most of the roof
by January. Total project cost is $205,000.
Pomerene Hall -- Olentangy Restoration of Marion received a
contract to replace the roof. Total project cost is $380,000.
Work is to be done in May 1995.
Postle Hall -- Buckeye Asbestos of Cincinnati received a
contract to abate asbestos in two mechanical rooms. Funding for
the $146,300 project is being provided by the Board of Regents
and the Department of Physical Facilities. Work is to be
completed in January 1995.
Radiation Dosimetry Calibration Facility -- The $370,000
building by the Nuclear Reactor Lab on West Campus was funded by
the Ohio Emergency Management Association (OEMA) and Ohio State.
OEMA annually calibrates more than 30,000 dosimeters which detect
and measure radiation levels. Faculty and students in the
Department of Nuclear Engineering have use of the facility to
conduct research. Columbus contractors were Central Ohio
Building, Radico, and C.R. Legner. Fetter Electric of Newark did
electrical work.
Scott Hall -- A cold room, smoke detection panel, smoke
alarm system, and emergency power system were in the remodeling
finished in September for the Byrd Polar Research Center. The
Board of Regents funded the $400,000 project. The contractors
were M & P Construction, Gahanna; Farber Corp., Columbus; and
Royal Electric, Columbus.
Sidewalk Safety Improvements -- Gutknecht Construction of
Columbus received a contract to replace deteriorated concrete and
asphalt sidewalks with concrete and pavers in the vicinities of
Fyffe Road, Woody Hayes Drive, Ohio Union Drive, and College
Road. Total project cost is $489,800. Work is to be completed
by August 1995.
Thompson Memorial Library -- Roof replacement is to be
completed in January by South Texas and Lone Star Drywall of
Columbus. Total project cost is $338,500.
Watts Hall and Ohio Legal Center -- The roofs were replaced
last summer by Enterprise Roofing of Dayton. Total project cost
was $140,000.
Wilce Student Health Center -- The chiller and cooling tower
were replaced in August by Mariah Mechanical of Columbus and
Fetter Electric of Newark. Total project cost was $147,080.
NEWARK
LeFevre Parking Lot -- Kokosing Construction of
Fredericktown constructed a lot near LeFevre Hall. The state and
the Newark campus funded the $293,500 project.
OHIO AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER, WOOSTER
Central Campus and Gourley Hall -- Madison Electric of West
Salem will add electrical capacity to meet current codes. Work
is to be done in March. Total cost is $198,000.
Poultry Research Facility -- This $615,071 building project
on Gossard Drive is to be finished in January by Ben D. Imhoff
Inc. of Orrville; D and A Plumbing and Heating of North Canton;
and Abbott Electric of Canton.
Roads -- Northstar Asphalt of North Canton received a
contract for repairing and resurfacing main roads, including
Green and Gerlaugh Drives and Thorne and Williams roads. The
$187,500 project is to be completed this month.
Selby Hall -- Hicks Roofing of New Philadelphia replaced the
roof this fall. Total cost was $100,200.
Water System -- L.C. United of Sterling Heights, Mich.,
painted and updated the water tank. Total cost was $146,000.
UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS
Doan Hall -- Renovated space on the eighth floor will house
EEG facilities and pulmonary function and bronchoscopy
facilities. Contractors are Williamson Builders of Plain City;
Mandeville/Croson of Columbus; Rodan Mechanical of Columbus; and
Now Electric of Columbus. Total project cost is $858,000. Work
is to be completed this month.
Doan and Rhodes halls -- Work includes renovating diagnostic
support services areas to expand the Radiology Film File Room,
provide office functions for ultrasound, CT, and mammography, and
consolidate diagnostic file reading functions. The first phase
is to be completed in September 1995 and has a total cost of
$605,880. Contracts were awarded to M & P Construction of
Blacklick; Farber Corp. of Columbus; and Jess Howard Electric of
Blacklick.
The Ernest W. Johnson Park -- Wise Construction and D'Laurin
Electric, both of Dayton, constructed the park last summer on
Cannon Drive at West Ninth Ave. The park provides therapeutic
recreation for patients of Dodd Hall. Total project cost was
$177,495.
McCampbell Hall -- Rooms 188 and 192 will be renovated to
provide an exercise area, offices and examination rooms for the
cardiac rehabilitation program now in Larkins Hall and to provide
cosmetic renovation on the third floor of the Nisonger Center.
The $205,650 project is to be completed in January. Contractors
are Waller and Lund of Cincinnati; C.R. Legner of Columbus; and
Reco Electric of Gahanna.
Rhodes Hall -- Phinney Industrial Roofing of Dublin is to
finish repairing and replacing the roof this month. Total
project cost is $525,000.
Rhodes Hall -- A corridor is being constructed from the
second floor Radiology Department to new catheterization labs and
between the labs. Contractors for the $515,141 project are
Righter Co., Holdridge Mechanical, and Marco Plumbing & Heating,
all of Columbus; and Fetter Electric of Newark, $69,450. Work is
to be finished this month.
