Trustees approve Renovation Contracts
OHIO STATE TRUSTEES APPROVE RENOVATION CONTRACTS
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees
Friday (12/3) approved contracts totaling several million dollars
for 28 construction and renovation projects at campuses and
research farms across the state.
The largest project, the renovation of 3,800 square feet in
Goss Laboratory, will involve creating a containment facility for
retrovirus research. The building is part of the College of
Veterinary Medicine.
The $877,000 state-funded project is to be completed by next
November. Contracts were awarded to J&M Bennett, general,
$177,900, and Knox Electrical Construction of Pickerington,
electric, $98,500. Farber Corp. of Columbus received contracts
for plumbing, $54,200, and heating, ventilating and air
conditioning, $259,400.
The other projects are:
Columbus Campus
Botany and Zoology Building, Caldwell Laboratory, and Postle
Hall -- Improving elevators. The $438,375 state-funded project
is to be finished in June by Good Home Maintenance, Dover
Electric, and Julian Speer Co. of Columbus and Jess Howard
Electric of Blacklick.
Campbell Hall -- Remodeling old, inadequate labs for the
Department of Human Nutrition and Food Management. The $760,000
state-funded project is to be completed in December by The
Righter Co., J.A. Croson Co., Mariah Inc. and Royal Electric
Construction of Columbus, and Central Insulation Systems of
Cincinnati.
Doan Hall -- Renovating part of Doan Hall to relocate the
Histology Laboratory Suite from Starling-Loving Hall. The
$534,745 project, funded by University Hospitals, is to be
finished in April by Righter and J.A. Croson of Columbus and
Buckeye Electric of Dayton. A separate project involves
installation of an additional trash dumping facility and related
work. The $123,500 project, funded by University Hospitals, is
to be finished this month by Gutknecht Construction of Columbus.
Hitchcock and Ives halls -- Renovating lecture halls. The
$500,000 state-funded project was done by Navarro Construction of
Worthington and Lincoln T. Mandeville Plumbing and Advantage
Electric of Columbus.
Hopkins Hall -- Ventilating areas where chemicals are used
in art instruction. The $263,743 project, funded through state
and university funds, was done by Columbus Heating and
Ventilating and Romanoff Electric of Dublin.
Larkins Hall -- Repairing the walls, a $500,000 state-funded
project to be finished in June by H.K. Phillips of Columbus and
McLaughlin Building Methods of Chesterland.
Lincoln and Morrill towers -- Repairing stairways and
pedestrian bridges. The $200,000 state-funded project is to be
done in March by Brothers Construction of Columbus.
McCracken Power Plant -- Replacing a hot water heating
system that services 56 buildings. The $303,940 university-
funded project was done by Sauer Mechanical of Columbus.
McPherson Lab -- Converting library space into nine
classrooms. The $167,240 state-funded project is to be finished
in January by Dorsey Construction, J.A. Croson, Farber, and Royal
Electric of Columbus and Seneca Asbestos of Tiffin.
Means Hall -- Converting the third floor west from patient
care facilities to medical labs and offices. The $547,205
project, funded by University Hospitals, is to be finished in
July by Good Home Maintenance, C.R. Legner, Mariah Mechanical,
and Standard Electric, all of Columbus.
Mount Hall -- Renovating the lower level to house the Young
Scholars Program and other offices. The $471,441 project, funded
by the state, is to be finished in January. Contractors are
Navarro Construction, D.E. Mechanical/C.R. Legner of Columbus,
and D'Laurin Electric of Dayton.
North Residence Halls -- Replacing chillers in Barrett,
Halloran, Haverfield and Houck houses. The $392,026 university-
funded work was done by Bruner Corp. of Columbus and Claypool
Electric of Lancaster.
Olentangy River Wetlands Research Park -- Constructing two
ponds, pumping and outflow by the river at 350 Dodridge Road.
The $238,100 project, funded by gifts to Ohio State, is to be
finished in December by George Igel and Holdridge Mechanical of
Columbus and Jess Howard Electric, Blacklick.
Rhodes Hall -- Heating, ventilating and air conditioning
work to the surgery sections, at an estimated cost to University
Hospitals of $96,222. Work is to be finished in January by K/B
Mechanical of Sugar Creek.
Smith Laboratory -- Replacing some mechanical systems. The
$706,500 state-funded project is to be finished in June by Sauer
Mechanical and Superior Electric, both of Columbus.
Starling Loving Hall -- Replacing parts of the roof. The
$313,600, state-funded project is to be finished in December by
Industrial First of Columbus.
University Airport -- Installing airport guidance signs and
associated pavement markings and surveying the airport boundary.
The $351,265 project is being funded by the Federal Aviation
Administration and the University Airport. Work is to be
finished by February by Jess Howard Electric.
Veterinary Hospital -- Removing asbestos. The $357,567
project, funded by the Board of Regents and Office of Physical
Facilities, is to be completed in January 1994 by AAC Contracting
of Rochester, N.Y.
Wiseman Hall -- Renovating mechanical systems. The $731,180
state-funded project is to be finished in June by Bruner Corp.,
Royal Electric and AAC Contracting Inc.
Marion Campus
Restaurant conversion -- Renovating a former McDonald's to
house a program for student training in child care and services.
The $343,530 project, funded by the Marion campus, is to be
finished in December by Minor Construction, J.A. Myers, and Peter
Miller Inc., all of Columbus.
Parking lot -- Constructing a parking lot and road and
sidewalk extensions, and renovating the east road and sidewalk
between Morrill Hall and the Student Activities Building. The
$451,595 state-funded project is to be finished in May by Grubb
and Pipes of Iberia and Charman Electric of Mansfield.
Mansfield Campus
University Drive -- Restoring the road. The $130,216
project, funded by the state and the Mansfield campus, was done
by Mansfield Asphalt.
Eisenhower Memorial Center -- Replacing boilers, pumps and
tanks. The $81,975 project is being funded by the state and the
Mansfield Campus. Mohawk Mechanical of Lexington is to finish
the work in January.
Mahoning County
Mahoning County Farm, Ohio Agricultural Research and
Development Center -- Replacing two barns, repairing barn walls,
removing a silo, and improving the road. The state-funded
project, estimated at $66,000, is to be finished in February by
Aberdeen Co. of Youngstown.
Union County
Union County Farm, OARDC -- Tiling and other work to improve
drainage was done by Jack Martin of Centerburg. The $57,422
project was funded by the state.
Wooster Campus
Agricultural Technical Institute -- Patching and resurfacing
the parking lot and road, removing and replacing sidewalks and
curbs. The state is providing $198,000 for Phase V of the ATI
project. North Star Asphalt of North Canton is to finish the
work by June.
In another matter, trustees authorized employment of
architects and engineers for the following projects:
Columbus Campus
=FE Jesse Owens Recreation Centers, exterior renovations and
additional safety lighting, estimated at $450,000 in state funds.
=FE 1314 Kinnear Road, a new building to house the nuclear
engineering program, estimated at $250,000, with funds provided
by the Ohio Emergency Management Agency, Office of Research, and
Nuclear Engineering Program of the Department of Mechanical
Engineering; and masonry work on the existing building, estimated
at $220,000 in state funds.
=FE Taylor Tower-Curl Drive mallway, new pavement, walls,
plantings, park benches, bike racks, and lighting, estimated at
$230,000 in state funds.
=FE Rhodes Hall, a new self-contained birthing center on the
seventh floor, estimated at $400,000 in University Hospitals
funds.
=FE Bricker Hall, replacement of the northwest elevator and
closing of the east elevator, estimated at $150,000 in state
funds.
Wayne County
=FE Apple Creek Farm, Agricultural Technical Institute,
renovation of the beef barns and the swine finishing barn,
construction of a new bunker silo at the dairy barn, and field
improvements, estimated at $66,490 in state funds.
BOARD APPOINTS INVESTMENT MANAGERS
Trustees re-appointed several investment managers.
University Treasurer James Nichols reported that about
$70 million became available for investment because of the
receipt of cash from new gifts, the resignation of a manager and
reduction in the amount to be allocated for another.
"We've had additional money come in from fund raising and
contributions. We're allocating income that has come in in the
last year to the investment managers," he said.
Two million additional dollars will go to the finance
students enrolled in the College of Business's stock market
class, which has managed $5 million the past 3 1/2 years,
producing a market value of $7,946,647 as of Nov. 19.
"They were evaluated the same way as the professional
managers," Nichols said. "They had consistently good performance
over time."
The managers and their approved allocations are:
=FE Boatmen's Trust Co., fixed income, $5 million additional,
$30 million total.
=FE The Chicago Corp., equities, $13.5 million total.
=FE Duff and Phelps Investment Management Co., fixed income,
$15 million total.
=FE WR Lazard and Co., fixed income index fund, $15 million
additional, $30 million total.
=FE R. Meeder and Associates Inc., small capitalization equity
index fund, $5 million additional, $20 million total.
=FE Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management Mid Cap Growth,
equities, $20 million total.
=FE Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management Small Cap Growth,
equities, $20 million added, $20 million total.
=FE University Managed, equities, $21,133,942 total.
=FE University Students, equities, $2 million additional, $7
million total.
=FE Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors, Standard & Poors
500 Equity Index Fund, $54.5 million total.
=FE Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors, small
capitalization equity index fund, $5 million additional, $20
million total.
=FE Wells Fargo Nikko Investment Advisors, international
equity index fund, $20 million additional, $20 million total.
=FE Wood Island Associates Inc., equities, reduction of $1.3
million, market value reduced to $10 million.
