TRUSTEES CREATE SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN GEE'S NAME, APPROVE ENDOWED
FUNDS, CONDUCT PERSONNEL BUSINESS

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on
Friday (12/5) voted to establish the E. Gordon Gee Presidential
Scholarship Fund in honor of Gee, who ends his seven-year
presidency of Ohio State this month.

     The fund will provide a full in-state award for a freshman
student selected as a Presidential Scholar by the annual Maximus
Scholarship Competition.  The award will be named the E. Gordon
Gee Presidential Scholarship.

     Trustees said the scholarship fund was created to recognize
Gee's tireless work to communicate the excellence of Ohio State
to outstanding students considering their choice of college or
university.  He also was instrumental in personally encouraging
numerous meritorious scholars to attend Ohio State.

     Trustees also accepted nine new named endowed funds and
conducted personnel matters and other business during their
meeting.

Board accepts nine named endowed funds

     Trustees heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for
development, on development efforts, including the establishment
of the Thomas J. and Mary E. Heck and Leo H. Faust Memorial Fund
for the Law Library, a named endowed fund resulting from gifts
totaling more than $1 million.

     May also reported the establishment of eight other named
endowed funds with gifts totaling almost $600,000.

     -- The Samuel M. Melton Graduate Fellowship in Jewish
Studies, $250,000, to provide fellowships for graduate students
pursuing research in Jewish studies.

     -- James V. "Fuzzy" Marquard Scholarship Fund, $32,945, to
provide scholarships for students in the College of Dentistry.

     -- The Virginia A. Bridges Music Education Award, $25,000,
to provide awards for graduate students in music education.

     -- The James and Nancy Bradley Scholarship Fund, $17,527, to
provide scholarships for students enrolled at the Newark campus.

     -- The John B. Gerlach Medalist Scholarship Fund, $139,845,
to provide scholarships for Medalist Scholars enrolled in the
Fisher College of Business.

     -- Jerrold R. Voss Director's Fund, $62,350, to support
faculty research in the Knowlton School of Architecture.

     -- The R. Timothy Webster Scholarship Fund in Long Term Care
Pharmacy, $25,300, to support a professional student scholarship
in the College of Pharmacy.

     -- The Marilyn & Robert Brewer Art Residency Fund, $25,000,
to support students in domestic and international art residency
programs.

Appointments, reappointments

     The board appointed Darrell Parks of WORTHINGTON as
executive director of vocational education in the Center on
Education and Training for Employment, retroactive to July 1.
Parks had served as interim executive director.

     Trustees reappointed Randall B. Ripley as dean of the
College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Nancy L. Zimpher
as dean of the College of Education, effective July 1, 1998
through June 30, 2003.  The board also reappointed Zimpher as
executive dean of the professional colleges, effective July 1,
1997 through June 30, 1998.

     The following chairs/directors were appointed by the board:

     -- Richard P. Gunther of WORTHINGTON, director of the Office
of International Studies, through Aug. 31, 1999.

     -- Amy E. Shuman of UPPER ARLINGTON, director of the Center
for Folklore Studies, through Sept. 30, 2000.

     -- Richard Davis of UPPER ARLINGTON, acting chair of Near
Eastern languages and cultures, through Dec. 31.

     -- Robert D. Levine, acting chair of linguistics, through
Sept. 30, 1998.

     -- Irene Masing-Delic of COLUMBUS (43201), acting chair of
Slavic and East European languages and literatures, through Sept.
30, 1998, and director of the Center for Slavic and East European
Studies, through Sept. 30, 2000.

     -- Lawrence O. Onyejekwe, director of the Center for African
Studies, through Sept. 30, 2000.

     -- Margaret A. Mills, chair of Near Eastern languages and
cultures, effective Jan. 1, 1998 through Dec. 31, 2002.

     -- Peter W. Culicover of UPPER ARLINGTON, chair of
linguistics, effective Oct. 1, 1998 through Sept. 30, 2002.

     The following chairs were reappointed:

     -- Isaac Mowoe, interim chair of African-American and
African studies, through Sept. 30, 1998.

     -- Robert G. Sherding, chair of veterinary clinical
sciences, through June 30, 2001.

     -- Michael J. Hogan of UPPER ARLINGTON, chair of history,
through Sept. 30, 2001.

     -- Tamar Rudavsky of WORTHINGTON, director of the Melton
Center for Jewish Studies, through Sept. 30, 2001.

Resolutions in memoriam

     Trustees adopted resolutions in memoriam for:

     -- James Chapman, associate professor emeritus in the Ohio
State University Extension, who died Oct. 23.
     -- John H. Helwig, professor emeritus of veterinary
preventive medicine, who died Aug. 22.
     -- Harold Thoburn, professor emeritus in the Ohio State
University Extension, who died Sept. 27.
