COLUMBUS -- Twenty new named endowed funds totaling $3.4 million were established by The Ohio State University Board at its meeting Friday (5/4).  The board also formally accepted 207 research grants and contracts totaling $21 million from governmental, industrial and other agencies in support of research, instructional activities and service.

A $1.5 million gift from an anonymous donor has established The Warner Woodring Chair in History in the College of Humanities.  Income from the gift will by used to recruit and/or retain a distinguished scholar in American and British history, heightening Ohio State’s growing prestige in colonial and early American history.  The new chair honors the memory of the late Professor Warner Woodring, a member of the university’s Department of History from 1937 to 1956 and a specialist in early British political and legal history.

Named endowed funds

• The Robert H. Rainier Endowed Chair Fund in Industrial Veterinary Medicine and Research, $585,046, provided by gifts from Robert H. (B.S. Agr., 1959, D.V.M., 1963) and Nellie S. Rainier
• Baseball Athletic Scholarship Fund, $300,000, provided by gifts from John J. Schiff, Sr. (B.S. Bus. Adm., 1938) of CINCINNATI
• Baseball Support Fund, $250,000, provided by gifts from John J. Schiff, Sr. to support the varsity baseball team
• The Dale A. Seiberling Excellence in Dairy and Food Engineering Program Fund, $150,000, provided by gifts from Dale A. (B.S. Dairy Tech, 1959, M.S. Dairy Tech, 1951) and Jean F, (B.S.Ed., 1949) of FREMONT, Ind.
• The Younkin Success Center Tutoring Services Endowed Fund, $118,455, provided by gifts from the estate of Olga Sobbs (B.F.A. 1946) to offer free tutoring services for students, with preference to students who have served in the United States Armed Forces
•     The Lena Charles Bailey Breast Cancer Research Endowment Fund, $115,000, provided by a gift from George Bailey of COLUMBUS to support research in the Comprehensive Cancer Center – The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute
• COBA/Select Sires Dairy Cattle Research Fund, $50,000, provided by gifts from COBA/Select Sires, to support research within the Department of Veterinary Preventative Medicine
•    The Williard A. Staker Memorial Scholarship Fund, $30,300, provided by a gift from Staker’s Drugs, Inc., of PORTSMOUTH
•   The Rita Downey Isaly Innovative Cancer Research Endowment Fund, $30,005, provided by gifts from Rita Wolfe of COLUMBUS in honor of her grandmother, to support cancer genetics research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
• The Twyford and Donahey Scholarship Fund, $30,000, provided by a gift from Thomas L. Twyford (B.S. Bus. Adm., 1957; J.D. 1964) of WESTERVILLE and Richard S. Donahey, Jr., (B.C.E., 1965; J.D., 1967) of COLUMBUS, to fund a scholarship in the College of Law
•   The Jack and Frances “Babs” Fruth, $29,719, provided by a gift from Jack E. (B.S. Phar., 1951) and Frances “Babs” Rhodes Fruth (B.S.H.E., 1950) of POINT PLEASANT, W.V., to provide a scholarship for a law student
• The Shumaker Loop & Kendrick Scholarship Fund, $29,500, provided by gifts from Shumaker Loop & Kendrick, LLP and partners of TOLEDO, to fund a scholarship for a law student, preferably from Northwest Ohio
• The Marlo Sandow Wurster Memorial Scholarship Fund, $29,198, provided by gifts from Wurster’s husband, children, family and friends, to provide scholarships for senior nursing students and graduate nursing student support
•   The Honorable John D. Judge Scholarship Fund, $26,500, provided by a gift from Carol Judge of NORTON, to fund a scholarship for a law student
• The Ague/ Haushalter Scholarship Fund, $25,701, provided by gifts from Charles W. “Bill” Ague (B.S. Pharm., 1950) and Elma Haushalter Ague (B.A., 1949) of GIRARD, to fund a student scholarship in the College of Pharmacy in odd-numbered years and for student support in the College of Education in even-numbered years
• The William Chaney Vance Athletic Scholarship Fund, $25,546, provided by gifts from the W. Chaney Vance Annuity Trust, William Gerald Vance, Lawrence Gibson Vance, Barbara Jane Vance and Linda Susan Vance, to provide undergraduate student athlete support
• The Arthur H. Dierker Scholarship Fund, $25,400, provided by gifts from Charles G. Mayer (B.S. Ed., 1940; M.A. Education, 1947) from TIPP CITY and Louise A. Dierker (M.D., 1967), to support a scholarship in the College of Engineering, Department of Material Sciences and Engineering.  The scholarship honors Dierker, a 1926 Ohio State graduate and founder of A.H. Dierker and Associates, a Columbus engineering consulting firm.
• The Donny R. and G. Jeanne Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund, $25,315, provided by gifts from Trent R. Baker (B.A., 1983) and Todd L. Baker (B.S. Bus. Adm., 1991) in honor of their parents, to provide scholarships to students who are graduates of Columbus City Schools
•   The Jeffrey A. Uhlenhake Athletic Scholarship Fund, $25,217, provided by gifts from Uhlenhake (B.S. Hosp. Mgt., 1990) of NEWARK, to supplement the grant-in-aid scholarship costs of a scholar-athlete on the varsity football team
• The J. David Johnson Academic Excellence Award Fund in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, $25,075, provided by gifts in memory of Johnson, a professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, from his wife, Cynde L. Johnson (M.H.A. 1988) of SUNBURY; the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry; and from other family members, friends and colleagues of Johnson, to support development of graduate and medical students in the fields of medical biochemistry and/or molecular and cellular biology

The board also approved changing the name of The Archie Griffin Athletic Scholarship Fund to The Dr. Craig W. Anderson Family Football Scholarship Fund and changes in the descriptions of The Edgar C. Hendrickson Designated Chair in Biomedical Engineering, The George A. Jenkins Scholarship Fund and The Henry P. and Kathryn A. Kurdziel Education Scholarship Fund.

Naming actions

The board approved the following actions:

•    The executive residence facility at the Max M. Fisher College of Business, 2110 Tuttle Park Place will be named the Roger D. Blackwell Inn at Fisher College.  Blackwell has been a member of the marketing faculty at Ohio State for more than 35 years and is the recipient of the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award.  He is a highly sought consultant and lecturer to national and international business groups and has authored more than 20 books on marketing strategy.
•    The track and soccer stadium located at 2450 Fred Taylor Drive will be named the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in honor of the Olympic champion.  Owens was an alumnus of Ohio State and began his track career at the university.  He won four gold medals at the Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany, in 1936, becoming a national hero in the United States.
• A number of internal spaces within university facilities will be named for donors to the projects, including:

Personnel actions

• John C. Byrd has been named director and associate professor in the division of hematology and oncology, effective May 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006.  He will hold the D. Warren Brown Designated Professorship in Leukemia Research.  Byrd is currently assistant chief of the hematology-oncology service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and assistant professor of medicine, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and visiting assistant professor of oncology, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
• John A. Cooley of Columbus (43202) has been named assistant vice provost and assistant dean in the Office of Undergraduate Studies/Academic Affairs, effective Feb. 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005.  Cooley received a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Otterbein College, a master’s degree and Ph.D. in history from Ohio State.
• Peter E. Geier of COLUMBUS (43235) has been named senior associate vice president for health sciences business administration in the College of Medicine and Public Health. Effective April 16, 2001.  Previously, Geier was president and chief operating officer of Huntington Bancshares, Inc.  He holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University,  an M.B.A. degree from Butler University and is a graduate of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management Advanced Executive Program at Northwestern University.
•   Richard W. Hall of WORTHINGTON has been named interim dean of the College of Biological Sciences, effective Sept. 1, 2001, through June 30, 2002.  Currently associate dean of the College of Biological Sciences, Hall holds a B.A. in biology from San Francisco State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.
• Rajendra Singh of DUBLIN has been named to the Donald D. Glower Chair in Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006.  Singh holds a B.S. from Birla Institute, Pilani, India; an M.S. from the University of Roorkee, India; and a Ph.D. from Purdue University.
•   Michael J. Hogan of COLUMBUS (43221) has been named to a concurrent appointment as executive dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2004.  He currently serves as dean of the College of Humanities.
•   E. Christopher Ellison of POWELL has been reappointed to the Robert M. Zollinger Chair of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005. 
• Paul A. Weber of COLUMBUS (43221) has been reappointed to the Irene D. Hirsch Chair in Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005.
• Mabel G. Freeman of BEXLEY has a new title: assistant vice president for undergraduate admissions and first year experience in the Office of Enrollment Services.
• Ray C. Wasielewski has been named interim chair of the Department of Orthopedics, effective April 1, 2001, through March 31, 2002.  Wasielewski, associate professor of clinical orthopedics, is director of the Division of Total Joint Replacement.
• Susan L. Huntington has been reappointed dean of the Graduate School, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2006.  Huntington is vice provost for graduate studies and Distinguished University Professor of the History of Art.
• Robert Gold has received an extension of his term as dean of the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, effective July 1, 2002, through June 30, 2003.  Gold is professor of mathematics.
