Trustees accept new funds, approve personnel matters

Agenda includes construction projects, building namings, new academic units

COLUMBUS – The Ohio State University Board of Trustees accepted nearly $450,000 in gifts to the university to establish named endowed funds at its meeting on Friday (6/29).  The board also accepted 226 research grants and contacts, totaling $22.6 million.

In other business, the board approved personnel actions, construction projects and several academic affairs.

Named endowed funds

  • The Keenan-Slettebak Reading Room Fund in Astronomy, $56,000, established with gifts from the estate of Philip C. Keenan to provide for operating expenses of the reading room area designated by the Department of Astronomy
  • The Helen Strow International Programs Fund in the College of Human Ecology, $52,455, established with gifts from Genevieve B. Schroeder (B.S.H.E. 1953, M.S. 1973, Ph.D. 1978) and the estate of Florence J. Neuman (B.S.H.E. 1926, M.S. 1938, Ph.D. 1943) to support scholarships in the College of Human Ecology and international study opportunities.
  • The Bill Myles Athletic Scholarship Fund, $50,000, established with gifts from Joseph T. Lukens of CINCINNATI
  • The Ohio State University Military Dependents Merit Scholarship Fund in Social and Behavioral Sciences, $29,842, established with gifts from friends, relatives and corporate friends of military men and women of the United States Armed Forces to provide scholarships in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
  • The Conrads College Gifts Athletic Scholarship Fund, $28,798, established with gifts from Jack and Violet Cohen and the Cohen family of COLUMBUS
  • The Ohio Fruit Growers Society Fred O. Hartman Endowment Fund, $27,265, established with gifts from the Ohio Fruit Growers Society, alumni and friends, honoring Professor Emeritus Fred O. Hartman (M.S. 1941, Ph.D. 1951) to support scholarships in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
  • The Norman M. Stanley Scholarship Fund, $26,920, established with gifts from friends of Stanley (B.S. Agr. 1967, M.S. 1971, Ph.D. 1973) to support scholarships for students at Ohio State’s Agricultural Technical Institute
  • The Gordon C. and Susan K. Warnes Memorial Scholarship Fund, $25,328, established with gifts from Gordon C. Warnes (B.A. 1957, M.A. 1970) to support scholarships for students at Ohio State’s Agricultural Technical Institute
  • The Mary Plummer Memorial Scholarship Fund, $25, 250, established with gifts from family, friends and colleagues in memory of Mary Pettigrew Plummer (M.S. 1989) to support scholarships in the School of Public Health in the College of Medicine and Public Health who are interested in epidemiology
  • The Craig Cooley Graduate Student and Alumni Award Fund in Statistics, $25,235, established with gifts from the Department of Statistics
  • The Henry C. Gelbke Endowed Scholarship Fund, $25,000, established with a gift from Henry Gelbke in honor of his brother, Henry C. Gelbke, to support an Agricultural Technical Institute student studying dairy cattle production or dairy science
  • Guernsey County Alumni Scholars Fund, $25,000, established with gifts from members of the OSU Alumni Club of Guernsey County and friends of OSU to support scholarships for students from the county
  • The David D. Moon University Scholars Fund, $25,000, established with gifts from David D. Moon (B.S. Bus. Adm. 1963) of GREENFIELD to provide undergraduate merit scholarships in the Fisher College of Business
  • The Roberta Elliott Wantman Endowment Fund in the Department of Greek and Latin in the College of Humanities, $25,000, established with a gift from Esthen B. Elliott in honor of her daughter, Roberta (B.A. Latin and Ancient History 1971, M.A. 1973) to provide support for a classics student studying the Roman world

Change in name and/or description of named endowed funds

  • The Medical Alumni Society Future Fund is now The Medical Alumni Society Caduceus Fund
  • The Wildah Turnbull Walkup Memorial Fund is now The Wildah Turnbull and Joseph K. Walkup Memorial Fund
  • The description of The Bob Rodabaugh Agriculture Scholarship Fund has been revised.

Personnel appointments

  • L. Camille Hébert of WORTHINGTON has been named to the Carter C. Kissell Professorship in Law, effective Aug. 8, 2001.  Currently director of the College of Law’s Center for Law, Policy and Social Science, Hébert holds a B.A. from Kansas State University and a J.D. from the University of Kansas.
  • Caroline C. Whitacre of COLUMBUS (43201) has been named interim associate vice president for health sciences research and vice dean for research in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective May 1, 2001, through April 30, 2002.  She currently serves as chairperson of the Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics.  Whitacre holds a B.A. in microbiology and a Ph.D. in medical microbiology from Ohio State.
  • Barbara R. Snyder of UPPER ARLINGTON has been named vice provost for academic policy and human resources in the Office of Academic Affairs, effective Aug. 1, 2001.  She is currently associate dean and professor in the College of Law.  Snyder holds a B.A. from Ohio State and a J.D. from the University of Chicago.
  • Nancy H. Rogers of UPPER ARLINGTON has been named dean of the College of Law, effective Aug. 1, 2001.  Rogers had been serving as vice provost of academic administration and Joseph S. Platt-Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur Professor of Law at Ohio State.  Rogers holds a B.A. from the University of Kansas and a J.D. from Yale Law School.

  • Clara D. Bloomfield of DELAWARE has been reappointed to the William Greenville Pace III Endowed Chair in Cancer Research in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005.
  • Michael A. Caliguri of UPPER ARLINGTON has been reappointed to the John L. Marakas Nationwide Insurance Enterprise Foundation Chair in Cancer Research in the College of Medicine and Public Health, effective July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005.

Construction projects

The board approved the employment of architect/engineering firms, employment of construction managers and request for construction bids for the following:

·         Construction of a 200,000-square-foot Biomedical Research Facility for the College of Medicine and Public Health with funding provided by university bond proceeds and other sources, with debt service payment by indirect cost recovery generated by new research grants and other sources

·         Reorganization of University Hospitals clinical services space in Rhodes and Doan Halls.  Total estimated cost of planning and schematic design is $1 million with funding provided by University Hospitals.  Engagement of a firm will result in the development of a number of construction projects over the next three to seven years with a total estimated construction budget of $20-$25 million.  Each individual project will be brought before the board for approval to request construction bids.

·         Construction of a 650-space parking garage on Neil Avenue adjacent to the current Larkins Hall soccer field.  Total estimated project cost is $11.8 million with total estimated construction cost of $9.5 million with funding provided by university bond proceeds with debt service payment by the Office of Transportation and Parking. 

·         Installation of an Automated Transport System for the University Medical Center in two phases.  Total estimated project cost of Phase I – renovation to accommodate the system – is $1.85 million with funding provided by University Hospitals. Total estimated project cost of Phase II – installation – is $9.6 million with funding provided by University Hospitals.

Comparative Studies gains department status

The board approved the establishment of a Department of Comparative Studies in the College of Humanities.  Department status was granted to the former Division of Comparative Studies in the Humanities in recognition of its expanded scope since its 1990 formation as a tenure-initiating unit.  Since that time, the number of faculty has increased and undergraduate major and minor programs and a graduate MA program have been developed.

Institute for Chinese Studies established

The board also approved the establishment of an Institute for Chinese Studies, which will bring together faculty in Chinese studies in six colleges and 14 academic disciplines within the university.  The newly formed institute will provide greater visibility for the current scholars in Chinese studies on campus, better cross-college collaboration and coordination of academic activities in the field and better opportunity to attract private and public funding.

Law School, Heart Hospital named

Trustees approved the naming of Ohio State’s law school as the Michael E. Moritz College of Law in honor of Moritz, a Columbus attorney and Ohio State alumnus, whose $30 million gift is the largest single gift ever received by the university.  Moritz is a partner in the Columbus law firm Baker & Hostetler and a former director of Cardinal Health Inc.

The planned Heart Hospital, to be constructed on the Medical Center campus, will be named the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital.  The board approved the naming in honor of Ross, an Ohio State alumnus and president of Ross Laboratories (now a division of Abbott Laboratories).  The naming recognizes a generous gift from Ross’s widow, Elizabeth McKeever Ross, an Ohio State alumna and member of The Ohio State University Heart Center Campaign Committee.

Hospitality Management transferred

The transfer of the Hospitality Management Program from the Department of Human Nutrition and Food Management to the Department of Consumer and Textiles Sciences in the College of Human Ecology was also approved by the board.  The move reflects a change in focus in the program from food preparation to managing resources in the hospitality industry.
