Trustees Hear Fund-Raising Report

OHIO STATE ESTABLISHES FUND RAISING OBJECTIVES

     COLUMBUS -- Objectives for The Ohio State University's 
upcoming fund-raising campaign will include a variety of 
scholarships for students, endowed chairs and 
professorships, and several construction projects to build 
quality learning environments.

     Other objectives for the campaign, to be announced in 
September, include funds for arts, culture and libraries; 
research and partnerships; health and wellness; academic 
learning and leadership; and annual giving.

     On Wednesday (8/30), Jerry May, vice president for 
development, shared with the Board of Trustees the campaign 
priorities of the colleges, Department of Athletics, the 
hospitals, and regional campuses, along with university-wide 
initiatives.

     "On Sept. 28, Ohio State will begin a university-wide 
campaign that will include objectives for every college, 
school, and unit of the university," May said.

Private foundation giving increased 20 Percent

     May also reported that total private support was down 
2 percent for the fiscal year ending June 30.  Total giving 
was $92,893,698, down from $94,884,179 the previous year.

     He noted that last year, Ohio State received two 
estates valued at more than $2 million, while no estates at 
that level were received in 1995.

     Despite the overall decrease, giving from private 
foundations was up 20 percent to $11,349,151 for fiscal 1995 
as compared to $9,471,048 in 1994.  In addition, gifts from 
corporations and corporate foundations were up 6 percent, 
and total giving by individuals reached a record $28.6 
million.

     The amount of money added to the university's endowment 
during the year was $22.3 million, up 16 percent from a year 
ago.

Endowment value more than triples in decade

     Ohio State's Endowment Fund reached a record market 
value of $556 million as of June 30.  That's more than three 
times the $167 million value 10 years ago, reported 
Treasurer James L. Nichols.

     Income distributed from the endowment to fund programs, 
faculty positions and student scholarships totaled 
$26.8 million during the past fiscal year, up from 
$7.6 million in 1985.

     Nichols reported 2,214 named endowed funds at year end, 
compared to 1,262 in 1985.

Trustees approve new endowed chair in management

     The Board of Trustees established a new endowed faculty 
chair in the Max M. Fisher College of Business.  The Richard 
M. Ross Chair in Management will support a faculty position 
in management education focusing on operations, product 
development and manufacturing.

     The $1,255,000 fund was established by Elizabeth Ross 
of COLUMBUS (43215) in memory of her husband, Richard M. 
Ross, who received his Bachelor of Science degree in fine 
arts from Ohio State in 1938.  Ross became general manager 
of Ross Laboratories in 1946, and served as president when 
the company merged with Abbott Laboratories in 1964.  He 
remained as president until the late 1970s and continued to 
serve on Abbott's board of directors until 1989.  Ross 
served on the Dean's Advisory Council in the College of 
Business and co-founded Pace Setters in 1960 to honor 
outstanding students and faculty at the College of Business.

     The Rosses have been benefactors of the Columbus Museum 
of Art and other major arts organizations in Columbus.

Board accepts 25 named endowed funds

     Trustees also established 25 new named endowed funds 
with gifts totaling $719,200:

     -- The Electric Power Systems Engineering Endowment 
Fund, for support of general educational activities of 
faculty in the Department of Electrical Engineering, 
$121,840.

     -- The Kresge Endowment Fund for Computer Visualization 
Laboratory in Geological Sciences, $119,569.

     -- The Maria A. Melnyk Franks Memorial Scholarship Fund 
for two scholarships for music majors or members of the 
marching band, $49,190.

     -- The Department of Agricultural Education Program 
Excellence Fund, $30,000.

     -- The Van Wert County Extension Endowment Fund, 
$30,000.

     -- The Richard L. Bere Agricultural Economics 
Scholarship Fund, $25,000.

     -- The WOSU Stations Fund, $25,000.

     -- The Andreas Dorpalen Memorial Fund for doctoral 
student travel to Germany while working on the dissertation, 
Department of History, $20,000.

     -- Shirley Brooks-Jones and Ronald Jones Student 
Support Fund for study abroad in agriculture and natural 
resources, $18,971.

     -- The Belmont County 4-H Endowment Fund, $18,968.

     -- The J. Robert and Catharine P. Warmbrod Graduate 
Education and Research Fund for program support in the 
Department of Agricultural Education, $17,748.

     -- The George E. Ruff Scholarship Fund for a student in 
the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences 
who held state office in the Future Farmers of America, 
$16,413.

     -- The Paul E. Bates Chemical Engineering Scholarship 
Fund, $15,000.

     -- The John F. Disinger Endowment Fund for scholarships 
in sustainable resource management, environmental history, 
or environmental impact evaluation, School of Natural 
Resources, $15,000.

     -- The Lee Johnston Scholarship Endowment Fund, School 
of Natural Resources, $15,000.

     -- The Donald and Nancy Lamport Scholarship Fund in 
Pharmacy, $15,000.

     -- Master of Arts in Public Policy and Management 
Scholarship Fund, $15,000.

     -- The George Sladoje Innovation Fund in Business for 
new projects and activities in the Fisher College of 
Business, $15,000.

     -- The Ohio State University Retirees Association 
Endowment Fund, $15,000.

     -- The Manuel Barkan Endowed Fellowship Fund for 
students completing doctoral dissertations in the Department 
of Art Education, $32,000.

     -- James R. and Vylee Calvert Garstick Permanent 
Endowment Scholarship Fund for third- and fourth-year 
students in the College of Optometry, $25,000.

     -- The John D. Rudolph Fund for Author Speakers in the 
University Honors Program, $19,500.

     -- The Clarence A. and Beatrice Rohrbach Memorial 
Scholarship Fund in the College of Food, Agricultural and 
Environmental Sciences, $15,000.

     -- Student-Alumni Council Service Endowment Fund for 
support of university-related service projects, Office of 
Student Life, $15,000.

     -- Student-Alumni Council Upperclassman Scholarship 
Fund, $15,000.
