ACTIONS OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

     COLUMBUS --  The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on 
Friday (11/01) filled a professorship, named three Distinguished 
University Professors and appointed two department chairs.  The 
board also created 12 new named endowed funds and conducted other 
business.

Allenby named to Cullman professorship
     The board named Greg M. Allenby of WORTHINGTON to the W. 
Arthur Cullman Designated Professorship in Marketing, retroactive 
to Oct. 1.  Allenby, an associate professor of marketing, 
specializes in the development of quantitative methods to 
understand consumer behavior through the analysis of business 
data. He has taught at Ohio State since 1988.

     Allenby earned his undergraduate degree from Ohio Northern 
University, his graduate degree from the Illinois Institute of 
Technology and his doctoral degree from the University of 
Chicago.

     Established in 1994 by Joseph F. Cullman III in memory of 
his brother W. Arthur Cullman, the professorship provides support 
for the teaching and research of a distinguished marketing 
scholar.

Brown, Rubin and Fan named Distinguished University Professors

     Trustees named three faculty members as Distinguished 
University Professors, a permanent title awarded each year to 
outstanding faculty members.  The recipients, who each receive 
$30,000 over three years to support their academic work, will 
continue their regular program of teaching; research, scholarly 
or creative work and service.  The honorees were nominated by 
colleagues at Ohio State and internationally:

     -- Lawrence Brown of COLUMBUS (43214), retroactive to Oct. 
1.  Brown, a professor of geography, specializes in migration and 
labor force experiences and has taught at Ohio State since 1968.  
Brown earned his undergraduate degree from the University of 
Pennsylvania, and his graduate and doctoral degrees from 
Northwestern University.  

     -- Karl Rubin of COLUMBUS (43214), retroactive to Oct. 1.  
Rubin specializes in algebraic number theory and has taught at 
Ohio State since 1987. Rubin, a professor of mathematics, earned 
his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his 
graduate and doctoral degrees from Harvard University.  He was a 
recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1994, the National 
Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1988, 
and the Ohio State University Distinguished Scholar Award in 
1987.

     -- Liang-Shih Fan of UPPER ARLINGTON, retroactive to Oct. 1.  
Fan has taught at Ohio State since 1978 and specializes in 
fluidization, particle technology and multiphase reaction 
engineering.  Fan, chairman of the Department of Chemical 
Engineering, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from National 
Taiwan University, his Master of Science degrees from West 
Virginia University and Kansas State University, and his doctoral 
degree from West Virginia University.  He is a recipient of the 
1996 Alpha Chi Sigma Award for Chemical Engineering Research, the 
1994 Institution Eminent Speaker Award from the Institution of 
Engineers, and the 1993 Alexander von Humbolt Research Award for 
U.S. Senior Scientists.

Board appoints department chairs and reappoints a professorship

     Trustees reappointed Glenn S. Daehn of UPPER ARLINGTON, to 
the Mars. G. Fontana Professorship in metallurgical Engineering, 
through September 1997, and appointed the following department 
chairs:

     -- Samson T. Jacob of COLUMBUS (43201) as chair of the 
Department of Medical Biochemistry, through September 2000. Jacob 
comes from Baylor College of Medicine, where he was a research 
associate in pharmacology.  He specializes in biological 
regulatory mechanisms.

     -- N. L. McCaslin of UPPER ARLINGTON as acting chair of the 
Department of Agricultural Education, through June 1997. McCaslin 
specializes in vocational evaluation and has taught at Ohio State 
since 1971. 
Board creates 12 named endowed funds

     Trustees accepted 12 new named endowed funds with gifts 
totaling $4,933,697:

     -- The R. David and I. Lorraine Thomas Family Cancer 
Research Endowment Fund, $3,371,128.

     -- The Emanuel and Ann Rudolph Friends of the Libraries 
General Endowment Fund, $59,013.

     -- The Robert Llewellyn Crosby Career Services Endowment 
Fund, $25,000 for career services in the Fisher College of 
Business.

     -- Columbia Gas Family Merit Scholarship Endowed Fund, 
$20,000 for scholarships for employees or family members of 
Columbia Gas employees.

     -- The Roger and Jennie Hall Concert Band Scholarship 
Fund, $15,500 for scholarships in the College of the Arts.

     -- The Sheila Brannon Scholarship Fund, $15,000 for art 
students at the Newark campus.

     -- Olentangy River Wetland Research Park Program 
Endowment Fund, $15,000.

     -- The Jane E. Orosz Endowment Fund for the College of 
Veterinary Medicine, $1,180,000 for support for the Human and 
Animal Bond Program and the hospital support fund.

     -- The Albert J. and Martha Mattern Fund for University 
Support, $102,631.

     -- The David F. and Kathryn B. Beard Scholarship 
Endowment Fund, $100,288, for merit scholarships in the College 
of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

     -- The Virginia Grama Schmidt and Hubert Conrad Schmidt 
Scholarship Fund for Somatic Studies, $15,127.

     -- The John F. Isler Endowed Scholarship Fund, $15,010 
for scholarships in the College of Food, Agriculture and 
Environmental Sciences.

Emeritus titles granted

     Trustees granted emeritus titles to:

     -- Wen L. Li of UPPER ARLINGTON, professor emeritus of 
sociology, retroactive to Oct. 1.

     -- C. Benjamin Meleca of COLUMBUS (43235), professor 
emeritus of internal medicine, retroactive to Sept. 1.

     -- Ruth M. Conone of COLUMBUS (43235), associate professor 
emeritus in Ohio State University Extension, retroactive to Sept. 
13.

     -- Betty L. Milum of LIMA, assistant professor emeritus in 
University Libraries, retroactive to Oct. 1.

Resolutions in memoriam

     The board adopted resolutions in memoriam for:

     -- Ronald Courtright, assistant professor emeritus in Ohio 
State University Extension, who died Sept. 24.

     -- Merle C. Derrenbacher, professor emeritus in University 
Libraries, who died Aug. 14.

     -- Arthur B. Lewis, assistant professor emeritus of 
dentistry, who died March 21.

     -- Jerome Rothstein, professor emeritus of computer and 
information science, who died Aug. 4.

     -- Acie C. Waldron, professor emeritus of entomology, who 
died Aug. 17.

     -- Walter A. Zacherl, professor emeritus of dentistry, who 
died Aug. 26.

Williams wins student recognition award

     Trustees awarded a student recognition award to Cara Denise 
Williams of East Dennis, Mass.  Williams is a graduate student 
majoring in health, physical education and recreation.
