ACTIONS OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees on 
Friday (4/4) appointed a professor in public policy, a director 
of the Schottenstein Center, and reappointed two deans at the 
regional campuses.  The board also heard updates on the Office of 
Student Life review process and the vision of the College of 
Medicine, and conducted other business.

Schiavo named to Enarson Professorship

     The board named Mary F. Schiavo to the Harold L. and Audrey 
P. Enarson Professorship in Public Policy, retroactive to Jan. 1 
and continuing through December.  She began her teaching 
assignments spring quarter.

     A former inspector general of the U.S. Department of 
Transportation with oversight authority over the FAA, Schiavo 
gained national attention for blowing the whistle on lax FAA 
enforcement and inspections and for revealing safety problems at 
ValuJet and other airlines.

     A native of northwest Ohio, Schiavo attended Ohio State 
University twice -- obtaining her pilot's license and completing 
her freshman and sophomore classes in 1973-74.  She completed her 
bachelor's degree at Harvard and returned to Ohio State to earn a 
master's degree in public administration in 1977.  She received 
her law degree from New York University in 1980.  Schiavo has 
been named a White House Fellow and an OSU University Fellow.

     The Enarson Executive-in-Residence is an endowment initiated 
by former Ohio State President Harold Enarson -- who was a 
Professor of Public Policy and Management -- and his wife, 
Audrey.  The Enarson Professorship is a position offered to a 
recognized professional with extensive government experience. 
Schiavo is the third Enarson Professor, succeeding former state 
budget directors Bill Shkurti and Lee Walker.

Riggs appointed director of Schottenstein Center

     Trustees named Xen Michael Riggs as director of the 
Schottenstein Center, effective April 14.  Riggs has been 
director of Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois since May 
1995 and was the associate director from 1990 to 1995.  He held 
previous positions as general manager of the Kellogg Arena in 
Battle Creek, Mich., and as an auditorium manager at Illinois 
State University and Anderson University.

     Riggs will report to David Williams, vice president for 
student affairs, and work closely with the Department of 
Athletics to manage the center.  An advisory board will set
