$2 million gift to benefit Ohio State neuroscience research

Trustees accept endowed funds, approve personnel appointments

COLUMBUS - A $2 million gift from the Charlotte Curtis Hunt Living Trust to the Ohio State University Foundation will establish The William E. Hunt, M.D. and Charlotte M. Curtis Neuroscience Endowment Fund within the university's College of Medicine and Public Health. The gift was made in memory of the late Dr. Hunt, former head of neurosurgery at Ohio State, and his late wife, Charlotte Curtis Hunt, a former editor at the New York Times.

The gift will strengthen and expand neuroscience at Ohio State through support of initiatives, including research, lectureships and fellowships.

Hunt, who headed the division of neurosurgery at The Ohio State University Hospitals from 1962 to 1989, is widely known for his research on intracranial aneurysms and on a nerve-related eye disorder that subsequently was named after him. He died in 1999. Charlotte Curtis Hunt, who died in 1986, was a society reporter and editor, and the first woman editor of the Times' op-ed page. She is credited with changing the nature and content of newspaper women's pages to reflect the more newsy, issue-oriented stories that characterize them today.

The $2 million gift is one of 22 new named endowed funds, totaling $2,990,443.54, accepted by Ohio State's Board of Trustees at their Aug. 30 meeting. The board also approved several personnel appointments, reappointments, emeritus titles and resolutions in memoriam.
