Trustees: Street renamed, endowment funds accepted

TRUSTEES RENAME STREET, ACCEPT NAMED ENDOWMENT FUNDS

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees
voted Friday (9/5) to rename a portion of Fyffe Road in honor of
Fred Taylor, former head basketball coach, and accepted 22 new
named endowment funds.

Street renamed in honor of Coach Fred Taylor

     Trustees renamed a portion of Fyffe Road, between Lane
Avenue and Ackerman Road, as Fred Taylor Drive, in honor of the
former head basketball coach.

     The road runs along the west side of the Schottenstein
Center and will be a major access route to the new basketball
arena.

     Taylor, who coached the Buckeyes from 1959 to 1976, had a
career record of 297 wins and 158 losses for a winning percentage
of .654.  His teams appeared in five NCAA tournaments, winning
the national championship in 1960 and finishing second twice and
third once.  He holds Ohio State records for consecutive
victories (32), consecutive regular season wins (47), consecutive
Big Ten victories (27) and consecutive wins at home (50).  Taylor
was twice voted College Coach of the Year.

     Taylor, an Ohio State graduate, played both basketball and
baseball as a student, winning All America honors in baseball in
1950.

Board accepts 22 named endowed funds

     Trustees heard a report from Jerry May, vice president for
development, on development efforts, including the establishment
of the Professor Sylvan G. Frank Graduate Fellowship in
Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry.  Gifts of $453,750
were received from Chih-Ming Chen of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to
provide one graduate student fellowship per year under the
direction of Sylvan G. Frank, professor of pharmacy.

     May also reported the establishment of 21 other new named
endowed funds with gifts totaling more than $2 million.
