Trustees, VPs to Shadow Students

TRUSTEES AND ADMINISTRATORS TO SHADOW STUDENTS FOR A DAY
COLUMBUS -- Twenty of the people who make the decisions at
The Ohio State University will get a chance to view university
life from a student's point of view for a day this spring. Seven
university trustees, President E. Gordon Gee and his vice
presidents, and two other administrators will each "shadow" a
currently enrolled student during the "Student for a Day"
program.
The 20 students -- eight undergraduates, seven graduate
students and six professional students -- met their shadows
during a reception on April 7. It is up to each pair to arrange
a date for the shadowing during spring quarter.
The Student for a Day plan was originally the idea of
trustee Ted Celeste, who brought it to Hiawatha Francisco, a
student member of the Board of Trustees and chair of the board's
Student Affairs Committee.
"Most of the trustees haven't been in the classroom in
years, and they're all very interested in seeing first-hand what
goes on in the trenches," Francisco said. "All of the trustees
liked the idea when it was presented and are looking forward to
the experience. When Vice Presidents Janet Pichette and David
Williams heard about it, they asked to be included and suggested
we ask the other vice presidents, too."
Francisco got the enthusiastic support of board chairperson
Deborah Casto and the leaders of Ohio State's student government
groups. The student governments -- Undergraduate Student
Government, Council of Graduate Students, and the
Interprofessional Council -- selected the students to be paired
with trustees and administrators.
