Two Receive 1998 Career Services Award

TWO IN ENGINEERING RECEIVE 1998 CAREER SERVICES AWARDS

COLUMBUS -- Two members of the College of Engineering 
faculty and staff have been honored with 1998 Career Services 
Awards at The Ohio State University.

This year's award recipients are Carol Scott of LOCKBOURNE, 
special projects coordinator for the College of Engineering, and 
Jacques Zakin of WORTHINGTON, who holds the Helen C. Kurtz Chair 
in Chemical Engineering. 

Mary Daniels, assistant vice president for student affairs, 
presented the $500 awards on behalf of the University Career 
Services Committee during the committee's Year-In-Review meeting 
at the Faculty Club June 17.  The award recognizes university 
faculty and staff who support student career development and 
Career Services programming, but who work outside of the Career 
Services area.   

Scott has served the university for 27 years.  One nominator 
noted that Scott took on the responsibility for organizing three 
major events that affect student career development:  the annual 
Engineering EXPO, the Society of Women Engineers Career Fair and 
the campuswide Co-op/Intern Job Fair.  Scott managed employer 
registration and produced the student program for the campuswide 
job fair, which attracted more than 1,500 students and 94 
employers.  The nominator credited Scott with "putting in many 
long hours to ensure a quality event for both employers and 
students.  Carol's initiatives, organization skills, commitment 
to quality and customer service, and unfailingly cheerful 
personality have resulted in a consistently smooth operation, and 
rave reviews."   A student group described Scott as a "key 
resource for the students."

Zakin has been an Ohio State faculty member since 1977 and 
is the former chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering.  
In recruiting new faculty, Zakin sought candidates who, in 
addition to demonstrating strong research abilities, showed 
"exceptional commitments to teaching and student career 
development," one nominator wrote.  The nominator said the 
emphasis on teaching and career development among faculty was a 
"major factor" leading to the department's 1997 University 
Departmental Teaching Excellence Award.  Zakin also was credited 
with devoting "considerable energy to preparing students for 
industrial careers.  He sought opportunities for and encouraged 
undergraduates to gain industrial engineering work experience 
through co-ops and internships and by inviting industrial 
speakers in his successful ChE 750 and ChE 761 courses."
