United Black World Month Activities

OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES BLACK HERITAGE

     COLUMBUS -- Former Ohio State basketball star and ESPN 
broadcaster Clark Kellogg will join The Ohio State University in 
celebrating black heritage with the United Black World Month, 
Jan. 28-Feb. 28.

     The celebration will kick off with a Speak Out competition 
Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 
153 W. 12th Ave.  The competition will feature students speaking 
on "Dreamers, Achievers and Challengers: Recognizing the Past to 
Prepare for the Future," the theme for the month-long 
celebration.  An open house will be held Feb. 3 from 12 p.m. to 5 
p.m. in the Stecker Lounge in the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St., 
followed by an art exhibit and reception in the Exposures Art 
Gallery, second floor Ohio Union.

     Kellogg will be the featured speaker at the University 
Medical Center's Black History presentation Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. in 
the James Cancer Hospital Auditorium, 300 W. 10th Ave. His talk 
will focus on the theme, "A Tree Cannot Flourish Without Its 
Roots."

     Other activities include:

     -- "Children's Cultural Hour," designed to teach children 
about African American history and to promote pride and respect 
for African American culture.  Programs will be presented by 
African American student organizations on Feb. 4, 11, 18, and 25 
from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Hale Center.

     -- Soul food luncheons in the Ohio Union Terrace Dining 
Room, Feb. 6, 7, 14, 21 and 28.  A variety of African-American 
cuisine will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The cost of the 
buffet style lunch and drink is $6.50.

     -- George Curry, editor of Emerge Magazine, will host a 
presentation of "Voices from the Village," a series of videos 
produced by WOSU-TV featuring prominent African American scholars 
discussing issues related to the black community, Feb. 10 at 6 
p.m. in the Hale Center.

     -- "Get On the Bus," a presentation of director Spike Lee's 
film about a group of men and their journey to attend the Million 
Man March, Feb. 21-22, in the Ohio Union Conference Theater.  
Admission is $1.00.
