University Communications Offers News Tips

UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS OFFERS NEW SERVICE TO AREA MEDIA 

With this correspondence, University Communication kicks off a 
new service for central Ohio news organizations: a listing of 
potential news stories on the Columbus campus.  We'll update this 
listing every other week.  Topping the news this week: Ohio 
State's electric race car races again; Campus Partners 
improvement plan, and summer camps for future super-computers, 
artists, teachers, and scientists.  

The Ohio State University Institute for Innovation in the Arts 
and Sciences-July 10-28.   A series of programs for 9th and 10th 
graders from around Ohio interested in art, engineering or 
supercomputing.  The three programs are taught by Ohio State 
faculty and offer high-ability students very focused, hands-on 
experiences.

The Intensive Arts Program-July 10-21-Eighty gifted and talented 
students focus on one major: art, dance, music, theater, or 
creative writing, and will experience the other four areas in 
order to explore the interrelationships of the arts.  Good visual

Supercomputing: Scientific Visualization-July 10-21. The Ohio
Supercomputer Center offers students a chance to write programs 
on the Cray Y-MP8/864 supercomputer (up to 40,000 times faster 
than personal computers) and Sun workstations.  Projects will be 
selected from various areas of science and will result in 
supercomputer-generated videos showing simulations of the

Summer Institute in Engineering-July 17-28-The College of 
Engineering offers a hands-on laboratory concentrating on 
engineering design and use of computers.  Students explore how

Camp Attracting Prospective Educators (CAPE)-July 12-16-Ohio 
State University co-hosts the fourth annual CAPE for high school 
students who want to become teachers.  104 students from across 
Ohio will attend classes and workshops at Ohio State, Capital 
University, the Columbus Zoo, and other locations.  On Friday, 
July 14 , at 3 p.m., 28 colleges across Ohio will attempt to 
recruit the students during a College Fair at Pomerene Hall, 1760

Campus Partners improvement proposals-July 21. The Urban Land 
Institute will present its findings on community reaction to the 
comprehensive plan to redevelop the University District.  Ohio 
State established Campus Partners for Community Urban 
Redevelopment, Inc. last January to improve the area around Ohio 
State.  Campus Partners has employed a team of local and national 
consultants to prepare a comprehensive improvement plan.  Initial 
design alternatives were presented to the community in May.  The 
ULI review of the plan is part of a series of steps to shape the 
plan.  Nine ULI panelists have received extensive reports on the 
plans and conditions in the University District.  They will 
conduct interviews with neighborhood leaders, business people, 
and city and university officials July 17-21.  Their findings 
will be made public July 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. in Drinko Hall 
(College of Law) Auditorium, 55 W 12th Ave. CONTACT: Steve

OSU Electric Race Car-July 22, Burke Lakefront Airport, 
Cleveland.  The OSU electric race car will attempt to set a new 
speed record in the Cleveland Electric Formula Classic.  The car, 
designed, built and maintained by university engineering 
students, is powered by twin battery packs.  On July 9, in a test 
drive at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, a 
team of students and national champion race driver Craig Taylor 
set a new, unofficial speed record for the Formula Lightning 
(University Spec) class, speeding down the track at 143 mph.  The 
Electric Race Car is one of several experimental vehicles being 
constructed and raced by students and faculty at the OSU Center
