University employee to receive award from Ohio National Guard

Paul Sherwood, assistant director in the University Engineer’s Office, will receive the Ohio National Guard’s “My Boss is a Patriot” award for his support of Mark Hartmann, an Ohio State staff member and non-commissioned officer in the 191st Engineers, who was called to active duty in March.

Col. Glenn Hammond, administrative officer of the Ohio National Guard’s 16th Engineer Brigade, will present the award at 2 p.m. Wednesday (4/9) at 1100 Kinnear Road, room 200.

Employers are nominated to receive the award by an employee who serves in National Guard or the reserve. The award is sponsored by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Research,

William G. Hospodar, director of veterans affairs at Ohio State, said 64 students and 58 faculty and staff have been called to active duty since January. The university provides each employee with a month of paid military leave and, for the individuals who are gone for more than 30 days, the salary difference between their civilian and military pay.
