U.S. House subcommittee to hold field hearing at OSU

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Friday, April 22, 2005, the U.S. House Subcommittee on Select Education, chaired by Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH), will hold a field hearing on “International Education and Foreign Language Studies in Higher Education.” The hearing will be held at 2 p.m. EDT in the Assembly Hall Auditorium of The Ohio State University’s Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road.

The field hearing will examine federally funded international and foreign language studies programs at American colleges and universities. Title VI of the Higher Education Act authorizes federal funds for programs to enhance international knowledge and support intensive study of foreign languages. These programs have gained importance and prominence, particularly in the post-9/11 era as America\'s competitiveness and security needs are increasingly tied to international expertise.

The Ohio State University, site of the field hearing, utilizes federal Title VI funds for a number of area studies centers, including those on Latin America, Middle East, and Slavic and Eastern Europe. In addition, federal Title VI funds support an international business program, as well as the National East Asian Language Resource Center, which includes the National Chinese Flagship Program.
