PROFESSOR WINS AWARD TO DEVELOP IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES
COLUMBUS -- DeLiang Wang, a faculty member studying image
processing techniques at The Ohio State University, has been
named an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator. Wang, of
COLUMBUS (43221), is an assistant professor in the Department of
Computer and Information Science and the Center for Cognitive
Science. He was one of 34 investigators chosen from among 416
applicants.
Wang will receive a minimum of $100,000 a year for three
years plus $30,000 for equipment to study image and scene
analysis.
Wang is looking to develop methods for a computer to analyze
the relationship between the pixels, or dots, in images taken by
digital cameras. This, he said, will help to determine what
meaningful objects are contained in images. His approach to
solving the problem is based on using neural oscillators, an
innovative technique developed by Wang and his colleagues in
recent years.
"It would be nice if a computer could have some
understanding of what is in the image, rather than just store
images," Wang said. A computer user could then interpret a
picture of a scene and be able to sort pictures on a computer
based on content, not just date or location.
According to Rear Adm. Marc Pelaez, chief of Naval Research,
Wang was chosen because of his academic achievements, ability to
contribute to the strength of the nation's research and
development, and the commitment to him expressed by university
administrators.
Wang has three degrees in computer science: bachelor's and
master's degrees from Beijing University and a doctorate from the
University of Southern California. He teaches courses in
artificial intelligence and conducts research in the area of
neural networks.
