Winners of essay contest to be recognized in Washington, D.C.

COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University School of Public Policy and Management and The John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public Policy have announced the results of the 2004 Public Policy Essay Competition.

The Public Policy Essay Competition, open to all full-time juniors and seniors at U.S. colleges and universities, as well as international students pursuing their first college or university level degree outside the United States, provides an annual opportunity for students to reflect on an important policy issue. This year, students addressed the question: “What is the Essence of Excellent Leadership?”

Senator John Glenn, chair of the Institute’s Board of Directors, will present the student winners with their awards at a luncheon in their honor on Thursday (5/20) in Washington, D.C.

“Involving students in public policy is essential to democracy,” Glenn said. “The Institute is especially proud of promoting the link between education and public policy through this essay competition.”

In addition, the winners will attend a reception held by the School of Public Policy and Management and the John Glenn Institute later that day in Washington. Ohio State President Karen A. Holbrook will attend the reception to congratulate both the students and Leonard Downie, Jr., Executive Editor of The Washington Post, who will receive the School’s Excellence in Public Service Award.

Winners of the 2004 Public Policy Essay Competition are:

Melvin Redeker II, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Second Prize ($500)

Douglas Cain, Purdue University, Third Prize ($300)

Joseph Macri II, The Ohio State University, Fourth Prize ($200)

Parashar Kulkarni, Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai
University of India, International Student Prize ($250)
