Workshop on Nontraditional Scientists

SCIENTISTS SEEK TO BOOST INTEREST AMONG WOMEN AND MINORITIES

     COLUMBUS -- Scientists from The Ohio State University 
will participate in a workshop designed to educate science 
teachers from around the state about non-traditional 
scientists.

     The program, "Science Education: That Really is for 
All," is sponsored by the Association for Women in Science 
in Central Ohio (AWISCO) and the Ohio Department of 
Education.  It will be Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 
the National Center for Science Teaching and Learning, 1929 
Kenny Road, on the Ohio State campus.

     "The one-day workshop will address issues of inclusion 
in science education," said Raquel Diaz-Sprague, executive 
director of AWISCO.  "We believe that if teachers meet non-
traditional scientists, they will gain a better 
understanding of the diversity of the scientific community 
and take that understanding into their classrooms."

     AWISCO is a local chapter of the Association for Women 
in Science, a national non-profit organization with chapters 
in all 50 states.  Founded 24 years ago, the association 
promotes educational and employment opportunities for girls 
and women.

     The program will include panel discussions led by women 
and minority scientists from Ohio State.  Topics will cover 
the importance of mentoring by science teachers and ways to 
dispel the stereotype that science is for white males.  The 
keynote address will be given by Mary Atwater of the 
University of Georgia, who will speak on multicultural 
science teaching.

     "We want to promote discussion of ways to reach and 
develop the scientific interests of students who have been 
historically discouraged from science studies," Diaz-Sprague 
said.

     Tours of the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for 
Mathematics and Science Education and the Ohio State Dairy 
Research Complex will also be given.

     The fee for the workshop is $50 and scholarships are 
available.  Participants will be eligible for continuing 
education credits approved by the Ohio Department of 
Education.
