Young Scholars hear how two prevailed despite obstacles
Two men who triumphed despite their unique life challenges will join the Ohio State University Young Scholars at the Samuel DuBois Cook Summer Academy on Tuesday (7/12). Billy Hensley and Reggie Anglen will talk about the secrets of their success at 7 p.m. in 100 McPherson Lab, 140 W. 18th Avenue. The presentation is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
Hensley, a native of rural Kentucky, was the first person in his family to go to college. He learned firsthand the importance of federal Pell Grants and TRIO programs such as Upward Bound and Student Support Services and has since become a passionate supporter of college access for all. Currently, program development coordinator for the Ohio College Access Network, Hensley will talk about the socioeconomic and educational challenges he faced as an Appalachian American.
Anglen, who is blind, overcame many obstacles to get his degree. A former public relations coordinator at Ohio State, he developed several projects to reach minorities, especially African-Americans. They included a weekly radio show, work as a university liaison, and a participation in a television series on issues facing women and minorities. He will discuss how he conquered seemingly insurmountable odds that he faced as result of his visual impairment.
The Ohio State University Office of Minority Affairs established the Young Scholars Program (YSP) in 1988 as a statewide model to increase the number of low-income students, including African-American, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian, and Appalachian students to pursue a college degree. Through partnerships with Ohio State and the nine largest urban school districts and communities in Ohio, YSP nurtures the enormous potential of its students through academic, personal, and career development initiatives.
